In recent years, the souls-like genre has arisen as the preferred style for emerging game developers. To compete in this highly saturated market, games in this genre have to be as unique as possible, introducing concepts and ideas that differentiate them from their competitors. Perhaps that's the reason why Ringborn is such an outstanding game.

RPG fans will find that Ringborn shares more of its DNA with Diablo than it does with games like Dark Souls. Under the layers of insane difficulty and tactical combat, there's an engaging RPG experience that every player should at least try – as long as you can bear with some minor annoyances, that is.

Smith to Win

The developer, Parramatta Games Studios, has made it abundantly clear that they wanted to make a game where the protagonist is just another common peasant living his life in the unrelenting world of the 19th Century. Much like Kingdom Come: Deliverance, your character is just an Average Joe trying to make ends meet.

In this world, this means only one thing: you have to smith. And not just smith: you'll have to smith a lot. While combat and exploration make up a good chunk of the gameplay loop, smithing and crafting might as well be the core of Ringborn, and it comes to a point when it just feels borderline absurd.

Ring Combat

Once you've crafted your 100th piece of leather armor, you might be ready to face enemies in combat on the ring. As the name may imply, most of the enemy encounters in Ringborn take place in an arena of sorts, where challengers meet under the rules of gladiatorial combat.

This is where the game suddenly embraces its souls-like tradition. The combat feels slow and methodical, almost to a fault. As much as I wanted to enjoy this portion of the game, I couldn't help but feel like something was off about the game's controls; they feel a bit too floaty for a game like this, which could also be a symptom of the erratic character animations.

An Impactful Plot

Despite the game not having any voice-acted lines, every character has been written with the utmost care, delivering a heartfelt plot that rivals what we've seen from even the most impressive triple-A games. A lot of care went into creating a world that felt unique and, most of all, genuine.

Part of the reason why Ringborn seems to be a cut above some other indie games in the same genre has to do with the game's outstanding visuals. The animations might not be up to par with how pretty the world looks, but that's something that, hopefully, the developer may address sometime down the line.

8.5

Ringborn is everything a great souls-like game should be: challenging, with a strong art direction, and addictive. Some better controls would go a long way in making the game feel a bit more refined.

Pros

  • Solid story with well-written characters
  • Addictive gameplay loop
  • Gorgeous graphics, particularly in background objects

Cons

  • Clunky controls
  • Choppy animations
  • Smithing and crafting can get a bit repetitive
