Brought to us by Wayforward Games, Rubi: The Wayward Mira is a game that I am very excited about. When it comes to 2D action games has there been a better studio than Wayforward Games in the last decade or so? I really do not think there has been and this game right here has all the hallmarks of one of their titles. I wanted to share my thoughts on the game today along with what this game is all about.

Saving A Dying Planet

One of the cool things about Rubi: The Wayward Mira is that it has a really awesome sci-fi story to play through, a story with multiple endings for us to discover. We play as Rubi who is a Mira and she is on Earth trying to find her way back to her home planet to save it and reunite with her family. There are other Mira who have gone “feral” and they are going to do what they can to stop her from achieving her goal. I think the story here is fun stuff and the multiple endings are going to give us plenty of reason to play through the game more than once.

The Presentation Really Is Advanced!

When it comes to retro looking 2D games, I really do think that Wayforward are one of the best out there. Rubi: The Wayward Mira has the look of a higher end Game Boy Advance title, actually, I would say that it kind of resembles some of the work that they did on the Nintendo DS more than anything else. It has these fantastic 2D sprites and as the game is set on a version of Earth, things have a bit of familiarity to them, all be it with a sci-f and fantasy kind of twist which I think is really cool. As is the case with other Wayforward Games projects, this one also has a funky and awesome soundtrack to go along with these visuals too.

Going Your Own Way

As far as the gameplay of Rubi: The Wayward Mira goes, what we basically have here is a Metroidvania style of game and I am more than ok with that. We control Rubi as we explore this Earth and try to kickstart the Hadron Collider to make her way home and save the day. You are free to go where you want, but the progression is done in your typical Metroidvania style where areas may be locked until you have the right means to get through it. Rubi can use melee attacks, projectiles, dashes and there is plenty of old school platforming here too!

I will always be excited when Wayforward Games have something new out. I will admit that I do think that Rubi: The Wayward Mira from what I have seen is not trying anything radically new, but it ticks all the boxes of what makes a great Metroidvania style of game. If you like this type of thing, I see no reason at all why this is not going to be something that you have a whole lot of fun with.

Pros:

  • I love the sci-fi style story that is being told
  • It has fantastic 2D graphics and very fluid animation
  • The combat system looks like it is going to be a lot of fun
  • There are different endings that you can work towards

Cons:

  • It does not look like it is taking many if any risks in the gameplay department
  • If Wayforward Games have not won you over before, I do not see this one doing it for you either
