One of the things we love the most year after year are those games that just seem to appear out of nowhere without making any noise and they end up surprising people by how good they turn out to be. And that’s exactly the case of Supraland Six Inches Under, possibly one of the most pleasing surprises of 2019, even though it launched early in the year. However, nowadays it seems to have never taken flight since it never was actually a popular game. But it is one of the most original puzzle games we’ve seen in a while. So, let’s see what this game is all about!

About the game

Supraland Six Inches Under is mainly an adventure puzzle and exploration game with some hints at the platformer genre. It also draws a lot of inspiration from some of the most popular names in the industry. The game features an open-world structure with complex scenery that's completely interconnected and full of secrets to discover.

The term "sandbox" gets thrown a lot these days in the gaming industry, but in this case, it's the best way to describe it, as it is a literal sandbox. The game takes place in a miniature world inside a sandbox in a kid's garden, and the games the kid plays are the main element for the setting in Supraland Six Inches Under. The narrative is mostly a light experience, full of simplicity that is constantly interesting and entertaining somehow.

We are on an epic journey inside the small sandbox world, and the puzzles in the main story get tougher as you progress in the game. There's combat, exploration, and some elements that resemble a platformer game, as it will require you to clear "levels" to proceed with the game.

Inspiration from the best

Developed mostly in solitary by the german David Münnich, Supraland Six Inches Under is a pretty ambitious game with an interesting mixture of inspirations. As the developer himself describes this game as "a mix between Portal, Zelda, and Metroid. Explore, find secret upgrades, solve puzzles, defeat monsters, find new abilities that will help you get to new places. And with that description, you could add the Talos Principle to the mixture.

While there are clear elements of every game mentioned by the developer, to really understand what this game is all about it's not enough to just go by those references, as it is a great unique experience by itself.

Supraland Six Inches Under is a pretty original and effective game. The plot development is pretty entertaining and has a well-balanced difficulty, even though it leans more to the tougher side. This game is a challenging experience you should really check out if you like these kinds of titles.

That being said, the game falls a little apart on the combat mechanics, as they aren't well developed. They are also pretty repetitive and it doesn't really feel as if there's enough intensity to make the combat any interesting. And the fact that there's a lot of combat to do can be a bit of a pain since it isn't nearly as published like the rest of the game. However, this isn't enough of a problem to obscure all the positive things you can say about Supraland Six Inches Under.
