Gameplay

The gameplay is as described, turn-based tactical roguelike which means a lot of running around and fighting. Turn based means you and your opponents take turns shooting each other in this masterfully crafted title that shares some intriguing resemblances with X-Com.

Thanks to its procedural generation of levels and enemy encounters, you can play this title over and over again and never feel like you’re playing the same mission twice. That is something that really improves overall value and increases gameplay time.

You create your character as you see fit with fluid classes and unlockable abilities that really let you try some new stuff, and progress in a natural and engaging way. On top of that, this does have a small base builder function as well. You will improve and expand your raider’s base with powerful upgrades for your characters that help you progress on your journey. You’re going to need to work for it to be the best and survive some of these more challenging fights. The loot is something to behold. Ruin Raiders has a fantastic loot system with over 100 unique weapons and accessories that further increase gameplay value and allow you to further customize your raider to be exactly how you want them.

Visuals

The visuals of this title are incredible! Everything looks so crisp and clean; it almost has an Overcooked 2 vibe with the cartoonish but very refined aesthetic and character design. I was regularly shocked and impressed by how pleasant the level design was, how smooth the movements and how fantastic the particle effects were. Every ability you utilize, grenade you throw or attack you make is beautifully rendered in 3D and brings some more life and vibrancy to this already stunning game.

Level Design

So, I know I mentioned the level design in the gameplay section but I feel I need to capitalize on it a little bit as it is truly brilliant. Every level is divided into little squares and the levels vary in size but this grid remains throughout. These square tiles can have a variety of things on it like obstructions to funnel movement, lava, acid and missing spaces as physical hazards, as well as a lot of other interesting items like crystals or barrels that act as cover.

Because this game has procedurally generated levels, these are different each and every single time. That might not seem like the most incredible thing at first glance but realise that this means, technically, unlimited gameplay with constantly evolving trials that test you on every step. If that doesn’t excite you, nothing will.
