I have to say that Despot's Game is one of the craziest and most fun rogue-like games to be released this year. The while building an expendable army in a dystopian future thing that they have going on here is a lot of fun. I think the fact that they have made this game “fun” is what really sets it apart from the other rogue-like games that tend to take things way too seriously.
Is Dying Part Of Living In This World?
The whole premise of Despot's Game is pretty fun. This group of people wakes up naked in a strange place. It is an evil labyrinth and there are a bunch of weapons and they need someone to try and lead them out of this mess and that is where you come in.
What is going on here? Is this all part of some crazy person's sick and twisted game or is there a higher purpose at play here? I like the whole mystery thing of what is going on and think that the way it unfolds is pretty fun. Oh and just who the hell is this Despot character???
Preparing For Battle!
As you are in command of a bunch of useless little flesh sacks in Despot's Game, you need to make sure that they are ready for the battles ahead. You have this loot and this loot does more than just give them a spear or a sword. It can actually make them a class! There are many classes in this game that you can have such as wizards, ninjas, and more. There is a ton of variety here and much of it is done with a real sense of humor. Playing around and finding the best classes is part of getting through this game. I am sure there will be a lot of trial and error, but that is part of the fun.
I Love It When A Plan Comes Together
You do not actually get directly involved in the battles in Despot's Game. You select what warriors you want, what they have, where they will be on the battlefield and so on and then you let them get at it. This really forces you to think about how you set things up as one wrong move or wrong placement could end in disaster! One thing that is really cool is that as you progress from room to room in this randomly generated labyrinth. If you make it to the end, the “bosses” you fight are the mega builds of other players and that is pretty cool.
Little Flesh People Look So Cute
The presentation of Despot's Game is a lot of fun. I love how little the characters are, but the enemy designs from these cool looking robots to weird monsters have a nice amount of detail and are pretty fun. A huge part of the reason I got a kick out of the presentation was the fantastic animation. The whole game is dark and moody, but it is all done in a way that is really fun.
If you like these types of games then you are in for a real treat with this. I love the whole style of Despot's Game and think that the way you can make these little people all kinds of fun and interesting classes is really neat. It is the kind of game where you will die a great deal, but that is actually part of the fun here. Trying to figure out what works and what does not as you attempt to get as far as you can.
- I love the weird premise of the game
