Serious Sam 3: BFE

I love the character Serious Sam and I think that Serious Sam 3: BFE is one of the most underrated shooters of the last couple of decades or so. As you can probably tell already, I freaking love this game! However, I am also not going to sit here and tell you that it is one of the most amazing shooters of all time. It has a very old school feel to it and the game is more about having fun than it is telling a deep and memorable story.

Before The First

While this is the kind of game that is not story heavy. I do feel that with Serious Sam 3: BFE the developers did try and expand the lore of Serious Sam more here than they had before. The game is set before the events of The First Encounter. There is an incoming alien invasion heading to Earth and only Sam and an old ass time machine can save the day! Ok, so there is more to the plot than that, but what is here is a lot of fun, especially considering the one-liners Sam throws out as you play.

Pretty, But Ugly!

This is a game that is not exactly a spring chicken, but it still has its charm in terms of the visuals. One thing that I really do like about the game is the variety. From the desert to a dark and dingy cave. Serious Sam 3: BFE manages to keep things interesting by ensuring that the locations you are blowing aliens away in change fairly regularly.

The aliens are some really ugly looking dudes and I love it! There is a lot of imagination here and while you do see the same enemies a lot. Their designs are so gross, ugly, and weird that you do not mind too much.

Fast Arcade Action!

The gameplay of this is very fast and frantic. It is not what I would call a “thinking mans shooter”. Instead what we have going on here is a game that is all about keeping your finger on the trigger and having cat-like reflexes. It is a ton of fun and it is the kind of game that very rarely lets up. You will be mowing down hordes of aliens and having a great time doing it.

Now, I love this kind of thing and this style of first-person shooter has been kind of pushed to the side in modern times. If you are someone who likes more strategy in your shooters or more story then you may tire of the non-stop action that is going down here. The different weapons available do make things extra fun. Ranging from stuff like shotguns to more over the top alien weapons.

Mayhem With Friends

For the time, Serious Sam 3: BFE was stacked with game modes in the multiplayer mode. These were and are a great deal of fun. You have stuff that you would expect such as team deathmatch and capture the flag. The game also has more crazy modes such as the awesome Beast Hunt that keep things interesting when you are playing with friends.

Pros:

• I love the overall style of the game
• It has fast and frantic first-person shooter action
• I liked the different varieties to the various locations
• Tons of awesome weapons to use
• There is a great selection of multiplayer modes

Cons:

• The game is not very “deep”
• The visuals do show their age a bit
