Skyforge is an epic MMORPG that pits you, a godly hero, against a legion of invading forces as you fight to protect your home planet. Growing in power as your followers gain more faith, your abilities will only improve as you continue to fight. Combining elements of sci-fi, action, and classic RPGs, Skyforge grants an addictive gameplay loop that's exciting and intense. Especially for players who enjoy quests and varied class options, Skyforge is an MMO to keep your eye on. When compared to a lot of its competitors, this great game has plenty of unique qualities that separate it from the rest of the pack.

Main Game Features

  • Hack and slash gameplay with MMORPG progression
  • Bustling community and lots of quests
  • Over 15 character classes

Story

The story of Skyforge is set in the distant future, where the planet Aelion sits at the top of the food chain. Under the care of the god Aeli, Aelion is the home of powerful and advanced civilizations, where faithful followers live in paradise. Protected by lesser gods known as immortals, Aelion is the target of many dissenters, under constant scrutiny from surrounding factions. At the beginning of the game, Aeli disappears without a trace, leaving the immortals to fend off an assortment of evil-doers who wish to use Aeli's absence to gain power. As a brave immortal, you gear up, select your class, and head out to aid the followers of Aeli as you repel the constant invasion.

Skyforge has an interesting world that feels like a fusion of World of Warcraft and Mass Effect, with both fantasy and sci-fi elements combined for a fresh concept. Truthfully, the main story gives you what you'd expect out of an MMO, with larger-than-life characters, villains, and locations to visit. However, with a lack of empathetic characters or surprising twists, it's hard to really care about Aelion or its plight. That said, the missions are still fun and it's fun to see all the different locations around the galaxy, but the story connecting everything is far from a masterpiece.

Gameplay

Skyforge finds most of its success in its exciting battles, which mix simple hack and slash combat with some really cool abilities. At the beginning of the game, there are three character classes to choose from, including a paladin, cyromancer, and more. However, after you've spent some time clearing quests and improving your character, you can switch between the game's seventeen unique classes at any time. The power of your character's abilities is directly tied to your progression as a player, since Skyforge contains a prestige-based leveling system rather than a traditional one. This allows you to swap between classes frequently without experiencing steep damage drop-offs, encouraging you to try new things.

You increase your power by taking on missions, most of which can be found in the game's hub world, the Divine Observatory. Here, you can talk to NPCs, meet other players, and travel to Aelion's various locations. Each area has various quest lines, objectives, and loot to find, so it's important to explore and return to locations again and again. Skyforge also features player-versus-player combat, so you can test your skills against other talented immortals online. Additionally, there are community events to participate in, as well as group missions like raids and instances.

Conclusion

Besides the unique setting and story, Skyforge doesn't drastically change the MMORPG formula, but that doesn't really matter. Thanks to the exciting combat, variety of character classes, and endless list of quests, this game will definitely grab your attention and keep it for quite a long time.
