Soul Dossier is a weird game for me to talk about. You see, I played this quite a bit with a couple of buddies of mine and we had a great time. However, I can see why someone playing this on their own may not enjoy it as much. This is a free to play horror style game where it is a 5 vs 1 kind of thing that is fairly common these days. It does what these games do well and I have to say it does also have the things that people tend to not like about games of this style. Still, it is free to play so you have nothing to lose by giving it a try and I wanted to share my thoughts with you guys today.
A Vengeful Spirit!
As Soul Dossier is a multiplayer horror game, it is not the kind of game that is heavy on story if you know what I am saying. What we basically have here is a “premise” more than a story and I think part of the reason I had a hard time getting into it was that the translation was rather rough (this is a Chinese game after all) so it is hard to follow. The basics I got were that there are some humans that are trying to get away and seal a vengeful spirit and the spirit wants to take them down one at a time.
Man Vs Ghost
The gameplay of Soul Dossier is similar to games like Dead by Daylight, the Evil Dead, and even the recently released Dragon Ball Breakers. You have a group of players that are trying to survive and a ghost that is trying to kill them. The twist here is that we have five human characters that have to run and try to survive all the while sealing the ghosts away. Then we have a ghost who as a vengeful spirit wants to kill all the humans and not be sealed away and they do this by infiltrating the group and sowing doubt with the other players.
The Element Of Doubt!
This is where the fun comes in with Soul Dossier and I know that I just name dropped three games, but I am also going to say that there are elements of Among Us here in this game too. You need to try and figure out who to trust when you are a human and this is way trickier than you would think. My friends and I had so many laughs playing this! Then when you are the ghost or vengeful spirit if you will, you get to be sneaky and screw with people’s minds. With other people this is fun, but with randoms that you do not know, it does not have the same kind of magical fun. I will say that out of all the games I have mentioned today, this one requires more skill and time to learn than any other game of this style that I have played.
The Free To Play Ghost Trap
So, as Soul Dossier is a free to play game, how much does this game have its hand out asking for money? To be fair, it is not as horrible as you would think. There is a loot box/gacha style thing going on here where you get stuff after a match and there are also premium options too such as characters you can buy. I never spent a penny the whole time I played this and to be honest, I never felt like I was not having fun because I did not spend any money on the game.
If you like games like Dead by Daylight and Among Us, I feel that Soul Dossier is worth you checking out as it has many of the features those games offer. I like the idea of being a ghost and trying to trick people and my friends and I had a lot of laughs as we were playing the game. However, most of the complaints I have heard about this such as the free to play model and it being pay to win in some cases are hard to argue with. At the end of the day, it is free to play so you have nothing to lose by trying it out.
- I liked the idea of playing as a ghost
- You can have a lot of fun playing this with your friends
- This game does require some skill to play it
- You do not have to spend any money if you do not want to
- It is a free to play game and it has many of the trappings you would expect
- The translation is rough so I found the story and what was going on hard to follow

Soul Dossier is an asymmetric action game with scary atmosphere, made in Chinese visual style with a lot of references to this culture, where four mage players fight against one maniac. The developers are GKDGameStuido, a company from Hong Kong, which has already had a few games on Steam.
Soul Dossier game is based on traditional Chinese culture, including elements with Chinese language (not translated so far), folk customs and many cultural elements, allowing players to experience firsthand the fascination of China. You'll take on the role of an agent from the Spiritual Investigation Bureau and embark on an exciting adventure.
The Spiritual Investigation Bureau
This game is about exorcists who wield various schools of occultism to protect the world. Using mysterious powers, they set in motion the currents of Yin and Yang, trying to build a wall between the otherworld and the earthly, so that evil entities don't wreak havoc. The player will take on the role of the player of the Bureau of Spiritual Investigations with the responsibility of maintaining the stability of human spirits.
This Bureau has a special technology - Spirit Mirror, a virtual reality system developed under the direction of the Psychic Bureau, which reads fragments of other agents' memories and projects a virtual three-dimensional world. Here you will take on the role of a spirit detective to begin simulated training and expand your real-life experience. The Spirit Mirror system stores data from the battles of many of your predecessors, and you can use their special abilities to help yourself in training. You will have the ability to use traditional props to seal spirits.
The mirror can mimic any scenario, from the scene of an ancient Chinese temple, the Secret Temple of Brahma, to an office building in the city. The chants of sutras in the courtyard, the sound of a keyboard falling by itself in an empty office building. Players can immerse themselves in various scenarios, working with teammates to defend themselves or fight spirits.
As the old saying goes, "if you know your enemy, you'll never lose a battle," you can also take on the role of spirits from the legend of Shikoku and gradually learn the spirits' weaknesses during training. Experience the thrill of the chase as a spirit, using each spirit's unique skills to prevent agents from sealing the five portals.
The three main questions are:
- Will you accept this tough challenge?
- Will you complete the training to the end?
- Will you enjoy playing more as an evil spirit or an exorcist?
The developers have come up with an object system for exciting gameplay. Not only can you use traditional magical weapons such as "Soul Calming", "San Jing Bell" and "Feng Shui Compass" to exorcise spirits, but also modern equipment such as "Night Vision", "Flash Bomb" and "Screaming Chicken".
