In this spine tingling new rogue lite, Soulslinger: Envoy of Death is the tale of what remains of Jake. In a previous life, Jake was a kind man who loved his wife very much. Now, he is only a few threads of the man he once was—and that may be a good thing. The world in-between is a dark and dangerous place, and it needs someone to help make it right again. Jake and his guns are there to help, in the hopes that one day his efforts will cause him to be reunited with his wife once again.

A Rocky Start

Although the premise of Soulslinger: Envoy of Death seems exciting, the community had a mixed response. Many of them report that the game has too steep of a grind, crafting could use more options, and that the animations seem to float weirdly. Others report that even with a relatively low frame rate the game still has trouble playing.

The good news is that the developer seems invested in the game and is listening to the community about their feelings.

The game is being released into Early Access, with the planned release period to be about a year. The developer thinks that will give them enough time to smooth out these problems and create a great game.

Graphics are Stunning

One thing many community members note, the graphics are nothing short of beautiful. The pirate skeleton vender is sharply detailed, the characters are all distinct, and although the color scheme is muted, the backdrops are also richly detailed.

Gameplay

Outside of the issues noted by players, the gameplay seems to be enjoyable. The game plays like a fast paced version of Witchfire, with running and dodging being a big part of gameplay. Limbo, or something like purgatory in the afterlife, is filled with bad characters that need taken down. Although the game is talking about the afterlife, and definitely has an afterdeath vibe, the game also resembles the wild west.

Jake himself is said to have lost some of his humanity after dying. He’s not as caring as he used to be. He’s tougher, colder, less trusting, and older—making him a perfect gunslinger to try and bring justice to this world. Because this is a roguelite, every single time the player dies they have to start over. This is part of the grind, and part of what frustrates some players, but it is in the fine-tuning stage right now. Hopefully, player feedback during this release will help make it better.

If the Wild West was your favorite era in history, this game could be a fun twist on an old story. The game has a lot going from it, from an invested developer to polished graphics. The prerelease not only gives you a chance to be first in playing the game, it also gives you the chance to have an active hand in shaping it.

7
