One of the first things that you should know about Witchfire by The Astronauts is even though it does not have an official release date yet, it has been in the making for quite some time. It actually started development in 2015, but the game had a completely different story at the start than it does now. At first the game was going to be centered around a post-apocalyptic survival game that was going to take place in space. It even had a different name back then known as “Astro Project 2” and now the game has switched entirely.
Instead of being a survival game centered in space, it is now all about first-person shooting and has shifted the focus from post-apocalyptic to simply a fantasy world. It is considered a “dark fantasy” which simply centers around scarier visualizations, and if we had to guess it will have something to do with witches based on the name.
Once this information had been settled on, the game was officially announced on December 8, 2017 which is now still three years in the past. So it took them two years to settle on the concept of the game and after three years of development, the official release date has still yet to be announced.
Despite the lack of an official release date, this has not stopped people from asking The Astronauts when it will be done. However to this date they have only said that it will be released “when it’s done”. If there are any updates to the timeline we will certainly let you know. Besides the lack of an official release date, you should also understand that the game will be single player only. So do not expect to be able to play against your friends at all, and it will only be released on Microsoft Windows as well.
We have found this game to be like Doom, a first person shooter also centered around a dark fantasy. Of course, Doom goes back way further than this game does but it sets a good precedent for all other games that are trying to join this category. With the bar set high, it will be fun to see if Witchfire can stand up to the challenge.
As for our personal rating, we would have to give this game a 7/10. It is only a seven since it has been in development for so long in what seems to be a process full of delays. Additionally it is only going to be on Microsoft Windows platforms rather than gaming consoles which makes it harder to play for the majority of gamers.
However it will make for a cool story in the end being a first person shooter in the dark fantasy environment.
