Squirrelmageddon!

Its Squirrelmageddon, folks. We always knew it would come to this. The year is 2184 and bioengineered squirrels have nearly taken out humanity, its up to you and handful of survivors to take the fight back those fluffy, four-legged beasts and reclaim the earth. A first- and third-person survival with dark humor and sci-fi roots, this wave shooter brings an interesting atmosphere to a gaming session. Yet, with a beautifully realized world, you can’t help but be a little entranced at the delivery, so the concept sticks. If you are looking for a funny game that you can sink a few hours into then this is as good an option as anything. Let’s get int it.

Gameplay

So, this title is a first or third-person game, and it allows you to pick at any time while you blast squirrels back to the hell they crawled out of. Run, jump, glide through the environment and devastate the evil rodent population as you explore and uncover the world that once was to better propagate humanities survival.

As amusing as this game is, there isn’t much else to it than this. Which, shockingly enough, is something of a shame. Usually, you can play a game like this, have a laugh and then move on with fond memories. Yet, I consistently find myself engaged at times as I traverse the world and explore in between fighting off squirrels. There is an amazing amount of potential here that feels like it was wasted a little in a joke game with no real punchline. That said, the rush to kill and survive is still very real and this game delivers it well. You find yourself genuinely having a funny little panic as you try to escape the squirrels, so I really won’t complain that much. It’s a solid game and is still better than Anthem.

Story

There is a surprising amount of story to this game. Climate change has forced humanity to move underground and, in our absence, Squirrels have become the new apex predator. Initially the squirrel’s penchant for killing was created due to the idea of using them as bio weapons on foreign enemies but as you would expect, things didn’t go as planned. The squirrels find humans delicious and within a hundred years, squirrels have decimated the world’s population. Like Days Gone but with squirrels.

Now that the world is stabilizing again, humans must move back topside and find a way to destroy their new enemies. You take control of a human with power armor and advanced weaponry; each expedition makes it further and further into the world. Time to join the fight.

Visuals

The visuals in this title are astoundingly good. The world might not be the most reactive to your presence, but the way it looks is very, very good. Vibrant green landscapes, fantastically rendered buildings in small towns, rolling hills and the occasional vehicle that will help you in your battle are present throughout. The game renders at a very high frame-per-second and looks stunning throughout.
