The Smurfs – Dreams

Almost everyone is familiar with the iconic blue cartoons that feature in their latest game, “The Smurfs-Dreams.” In this platformer adventure game, players are tasked with helping the Smurfs back to the real world from the crazy dream land they have fallen into.

The game opens into a beautifully rendered cartoon version of the Smurf village. The village is relatively empty except for some fruits to collect, and the various classic Smurf characters such as Papa Smurf standing in front of their homes. Players can then dive into a portal which takes them to the first platformer level. Each of the levels are vastly different and imaginatively created.

Artwork can make or break a game. The Smurfs are a beloved classic for many people, and staying true to the original appearance of The Smurfs is important. The developer of The Smurfs – Dreams really seemed to understand the assignment with carefully detailed characters. The backdrops of each level and the Smurf village are also well done, showcasing an imaginative world that will charm players as they navigate through each phase.

The Story

Although the game is mostly puzzling, there is a storyline to keep players entertained. Players are tasked with waking up all the Smurfs in the village before the evil Gargamel gets there. Players can choose to do this either Solo or with a friend. Each level of the game presents another Smurf’s dream, and completing the level wakes that Smurf up. When the whole village is awake, players have won the game.

Gameplay

The game does a good job of guiding players through how to play the game in the first few levels. Switches can be pulled to add new platforms to jump onto, projectiles can be thrown at enemies to fend them off, and all these things are readily available on the first level. It’s fairly basic gameplay at its core, and anyone who is familiar with platformers should be comfortable with this game. After the first few levels though, the Developers really pull out all the stops to give players a challenge. One level for example, is a mirror world where all of the player’s movements are mirrored. If you’re not on your toes this can be a very difficult platform to overcome.

Although some of them may be difficult, they’re not impossible to get through. Imagine a Smurf version of Super Mario 3D World. There’s a huge variety and all sorts of adventures and worlds to explore, but nothing that will have you throwing up your hands in frustration.
