In this unique gamebook RPG, players decide the outcome of a character’s life through a choose-your-own-adventure style format. The Use of Life is all about how the character chooses what to live for, and is a part of every aspect of the game. As the character progresses through a fantasy story, they are given choices that will affect the outcome of the game.

By making choices throughout the game, you will shape the course of the characters life, and get one of several unique endings. The developers made a point of ensuring that what ever ending you get, the ending isn’t “Good” or “Bad.” It’s simply an outcome to the choices made. This is a relief when so many visual novels are divided with stark ‘good’ and ‘bad’ endings.

Beautiful Graphics and Music

One of the biggest things that stand out about this game is the charming artwork throughout the game. These beautiful comic book style pieces are very well drawn and capture the mood of each moment perfectly. The animations are also well done and are reminiscent of a comic book come to life. The music also has a wonderful mood to it and fits in well with the comic book vibe.

Interesting Combat Dynamics

The game is mainly focused on choosing your own adventure, which heavily affects your stats and the characters thought process information for the game. The game does have a beefy combat system however, that requires strategy to win. When you battle, you can perform 3 actions per turn. Players must learn over time and often several defeats how to successfully fight a certain mob. This can be made more successful through your Curse EXP, which are benefits you get from having touched death before. The game plays like a blend of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and a retro Final Fantasy game, but still manages to have its own unique spin on things.

To be released Spring 2022

The Use of Life is not currently out yet, and has only a very general release date. The game is an indie release by Playism, a solo developer, and may take time before it can be fully finished. Right now there is a demo available for download that shows how the game works, and the game is expected to be in Early Release sometime this spring. If you are excited to see this game, you can add it to your Wishlist on Steam so you will be alerted the moment it is available.

The demo of The Use of Life shows a very promising game in late development. While there are still improvements that can be made, the overall result is an exciting game that looks at how we spend our lifetime through a different lens. If you’ve been looking for a game that employs strategy and unique combat with a great story, this game could be a wonderful addition to your collection.
