One of the questions every gamer and game developer has o stop and think about is what is a video game. And we don’t just mean the technical definition of a software entertainment piece or anything like that, no. What is really a video game, what is the idea, and what makes them attractive and enjoyable? Are video games pieces of art? Are they here just so we can have some fun? That is a nearly impossible question, it may be both, maybe none, probably we’ll never know for sure, it is pretty subjective. But if the core idea of gaming is just making an enjoyable experience to have some fun, the rogue-lite genre has it figured out, and that’s why we’re going to talk about a little unknown rogue-lite game called Tiny Rogue. Here we’ll see how the experience can be broken down to its core mechanics and present a solid experience. So, let’s get started!

About the game

Tiny Rogue is a game developed by RubyDev, and it is mainly a rogue-lite game stripped down to its core elements. As far as the story goes it won't get too complicated, instead, you get to build a completely new character each run, and then the game drops you into a dark level being the first floor, and immediately a swarm of enemies will attack you.

Things start off quite simple, and you'll only need basic attacks to defeat them, but as you progress you'll unlock new weapons and temporary attacks that will help you throughout the levels. But not just temporary attacks and weapons, your character will also level up and gain new permanent abilities that will increase your chances of survival and make you stronger.

There are three different core archetypes you can go for when building and upgrading your characters, and these are Melee, Ranged, and Magic. They can be pretty self-explanatory, but they can make an intensely different game experience depending on which archetype you go for.

At the end of each set of floors, there's a boss fight that gets really intense, they are not normal enemies, they are bigger, faster, and definitely much stronger than the average monster. There are over 200 pieces of equipment you can get to upgrade your character and over 60 different passive skills that will help your level get much stronger.

Striping the genre to its core

Tiny Rogues is a game that worked really hard to stripe both genres it is composed of to its core elements. These two are the bullet-hell genre and the rogue-lite. This game does not get distracted by dealing with a plot or even complicating itself with the art department. The visuals are as simple as they can be without compromising the general experience and still making it enjoyable. Unlike other modern rogue-lite games like Hades, this one eliminates most of the art and story to just focus on being a really intense experience.

8.5

Even though it is a fairly unknown game, Tiny Rogues is a very solid game, the gameplay experience is very fun and challenging. The character upgrades and the mechanics are very well-developed, and there's so much customization to do that you can go crazy with your character if you're good enough. Even though there are so many weapons they all feel unique, and all the skills you can get will get your character to new horizons. Overall it is a great game, even if quite simple at first sight.

Pros:

  • Great visual design.
  • Easy to understand and play.
  • Hardcore challenge
  • Fun to play

Cons:

  • A bit hard in the beginning, but with time, it gets easier.
  • A little more in the art department wouldn't hurt
