TOEM is a charming, lovely, and relaxing exploration/puzzle game that could very well appear on more than a few game of the year lists this year. With its black and white style, photography gameplay gimmick, and a whole bunch of weird and charming characters. It is a game that is very easy to get lost in and one of those games that is perfect to fire up and play when you are in the mood for something a bit more relaxing.
Explore The Town!
The premise of TOEM the game is that we play as a young guy who is now of an age where he is able to head out by himself and explore. His mother gives him a camera and a pair of clogs (I told you it was weird) and he is off to explore and capture as many great photos as he can. Of course, he comes across a colorful cast of characters along the way and he is mainly helping them with their stories as he experiences all of this stuff for the first time.
An Interesting World
You start off in your home area, but TOEM soon has you in many different places such as a forest, a mountain, and even a city that is all hustle and bustle! It is a great looking game and the whole black and white thing they have going on is very eye-catching. The character designs are cute and appealing and in general, it is one of those games that just makes you smile each time you look at it.
“Snapping” Into Action
As I said, you have a camera and this is basically what all of the gameplay in TOEM revolves around. You will walk around each area and chat with people and from there you will take on various missions. Each one is like a puzzle that you have to solve. Some are quite simple such as taking a picture of this or going to get something for them. Others are a bit trickier such as helping some ghosts who are sick of the way things are or talking to a moose who is also a DJ.
It is all fun stuff and the quirky cast of characters that you interact with makes it even more fun. I found myself wanting to chat to everyone as the different jobs you get to do help flesh out this interesting place. You have to complete so many tasks before you can move on to the next area, but you are free to do whatever tasks you like.
There are more tasks than need to be done in order to move on so if one is causing you trouble, you can skip it and try another. While there are many missions/tasks to do, you are free to just mess around and take photos of what you like which is fun too.
I am having a really hard time thinking of a game that is more charming than TOEM. It is one of those games that is perfect to put on after a long day at work or school when you have been stressed and need something fun to help you relax. It just oozes charm and it is a very fun game to actually play too. As far as indie games go, this is one of my favorites of the year and it very well could make it on my own personal game of the year list!
