I have always had a thing for dirt bikes and bike racing games, so hearing that TrackDayR had been out for a while and it completely passed me by was a real shock. Granted, I tend to steer more towards the arcade racing side when it comes to this type of thing. However, I had heard nothing but great things about this game, and I have a buddy who loves racing games that let you tinker with your vehicle, and he spoke incredibly high about this. It may have a steep learning curve, but man, once this grabs you, it really does not let go.

Two Wheels Are Better…. Perhaps

One of the things that really surprised me about TrackDayR was how I went into this thinking that it was just a pure motocross game, not quite the same arcade experience like you get with an Excite Bike 64, as I knew this was more of a sim. However, I did not expect there to be not just motocross bikes, but there all kinds of other styles of bikes too. I loved the classic dirt bikes that the game had, but there are also trikes and even bikes with sidecars. I was very impressed by just how much variety there was here, which is really what the game is all about.

Putting Your Mechanic Hat On

The real draw for this game and what is going to make it click for you or not is the customization aspect of TrackDayR. This game is all about tinkering with pretty much every aspect of your bike, from the wheels to the kind of suspension you have, due to the ultra-realistic physics engine that this game has. The slightest little tweak can make all the difference in the world. I tried making this bike that was all about speed. I thought I had a great plan, only to come off a pretty steep jump and pretty much come to a halt as I thudded on the ground. Honestly, if you get super into this, you will spend just as much time tinkering with your bike as you do racing, speaking of which.

You Need Your Helmet And Racing Gear

If you are coming into TrackDayR expecting a quick pick-up and play style of game, you are in for a very rude awakening. This is a game that has a very steep learning curve, and it is not just about memorizing the tracks (of which there are a great deal); it is about knowing what the right bike is for a specific track and how to get the best out of it. This is a game that is all about being played with other players. You can screw around offline, but it is the online leaderboards and championships that are the main meat and potatoes of what this game is offering. I really struggled when playing online, usually finishing in the bottom rankings, but I did feel like I was making progress and getting better. As I said, for those who want a quick arcade-style racer, this is 100 percent not that kind of game.

It Comes At A Price

I will admit, I had to do some real fine-tuning with this game, not just the bikes, but the settings too, as TrackDayR proved to be a pretty demanding game for my PC. It could be that I am a moron, but before this, I played Doom The Dark Ages on high and had no issues, but this game on high caused me some real headaches; it caused my PC to heat up like a furnace, and I even had a couple of crashes. I did find a good community that managed to talk me through getting the game to run fine and still look good, but it did take some work. To be fair, this is an amazing-looking game, and I think that they will probably work on optimizing it a bit better with future updates. Although I do have to say, some people have flat-out said that their PC will just struggle to play this, no matter what they do.

• If you are into bike racing games, you will love this

• There could be more stuff to do offline
