Trickjump Games’ take on the survival genre is a unique experience with loads of personality. 10 Miles To Safety pits you – along with 3 other friends – against hordes of undead in a harrowing fight for survival. This top-down shooter mixes things up with the addition of loot and base-building mechanics.
As you and your friends prepare for the night by gathering resources and guns, strategy becomes your best ally to survive the scores of zombies that besiege your base each night. If you’re a fan of the PvE gameplay of Fortnite: Save the World, then 10 Miles to Safety might be just to your liking.
Preparation is the key
In 10 Miles to Safety, danger becomes more intense as the sun goes down. Every dark corner could become the perfect hiding spot for a menacing creature, so light and proper preparation is something that every player needs if they hope to make it to the goal.
The goal of the game is simple: make it to the safe zone, 10 miles away from your starting location. Reaching that won’t be as easy, though, as to do so, you must first traverse a rich, randomly generated world that’s devised to stop your party from ever making it to safety.
Survivors and weapons
Before you begin playing, each party member must choose one out of five initially available survivors. Each survivor has their own unique set of skills and weaknesses, so cooperation also plays an important role in the game. As you play, you’ll unlock more starting survivors; that, mixed with the procedurally-generated map guarantees that you’ll get a lot of mileage out of 10 Miles to Safety.
An integral part of looting for resources is searching for improved weapons. In this game, you’ll get a considerable arsenal at your disposal, from the classic assault rifles to the more outlandish flamethrowers (and even katanas, just for good measure).
There’s a clear favoritism towards ranged weapons, however. Most of the time, if you’re using a melee weapon you can expect them to deal a laughably low amount of damage compared to most guns.
You vs. the world
The world of 10 Miles to Safety is one of the most interesting aspects of the game. Its procedurally-generated nature means that you can’t memorize the map layout for future playthroughs, forcing you to relearn the roads and hiding spots each time you play.
The addition of NPC characters fighting the hordes of infected on their own and people running for their lives also makes the world feel very much alive. The visual aspect of the game might remind you of some maps seen in games like XCOM 2, while the isometric view helps you when you’re scanning your surroundings.
10 Miles to Safety is a brilliant indie game that uses its particular isometric gameplay to its advantage, even if this style might not be to everyone’s taste. Weapons feel unique enough and classes add an extra layer of depth to the already rich gameplay. All in all, this is a great zombie survival game to play alone or with your peers.
- Randomly-generated map keeps things fresh each playthrough.
- Interesting setting and worldbuilding.
- Events and Missions keep you engaged in the gameplay.
- Divisive visual style.
- Camera angles can get in the way of the action.
- Classes aren’t much different from each other.
