Neverinth

Neverinth, created by the Taiwan-based CreAct Game, is an action-RPG that is set in Norse mythology. You play as one of three Valkyries fighting your way through various creatures and monsters. Officially released in 2020, this once promising game combines fun combat, a robust RPG system, and unique classes. However, it lacks in certain areas that could eventually use some polish that we may never see due to issues within the development.

The Female Dark Souls

Let's begin with the above average parts of Neverinth, starting with the gameplay. At its core, this game is an action-RPG where you'll be hacking and slashing your way through procedurally generated levels. The combat is stamina based, so you won't be able to simply spam the buttons and then hope to come out as the victor. This is very reminiscent of a Dark Souls game, but I can assure you that Neverith is a much faster and forgiving game.

As you progress the game, you'll have access to three unique Valkyries that have different skill sets and attack moves. For each character, you'll have a unique fast attack, strong attack, and then a special attack. The special attack will drain your health, so it prevents you from being able to spam it often. However, what's cool is that you'll be able to slowly earn that health back, as long as you don't get hit again. If you're hit again, the recharge starts back over. This means you'll be rewarded if you're able to stay safe while in the midst of combat. It's a fun mechanic that as I learned how to play better, I was able to take more advantage of.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

As you make your way through the game's levels, you'll be using all your skills against various beasts and humanoids. You'll quickly learn the patterns of most of these enemies as they're not too complex. Flying through stages using the dodge and dash abilities, collecting new items, and slicing down these opponents is a fun gameplay loop. Now you may die the first or second time you face a new enemy, but that only makes it more satisfying to beat them over and over again afterward, reaping the reward.

At the end of each level is a boss. These bosses are significantly harder than the normal enemies you fight through the stage, and for good reason. They'll tower over you, all while throwing all sorts of unique attacks your way. I faced a lizard-like boss that spew acid out of its tail and a demon-like woman who used her tail as a sword.

The RPG mechanics are actually quite deep considering you have weapons, equipment such as jewelry, and even totems. The latter can be heavily customized and tinkers with, granting you percentage boosts to certain statistics. That means you'll be leveling your Valkyries' skills (strength, health, stamina, etc), weapons and equipment, and your totems. Due to the randomness of loot drops, it gives you the reason to want to replay a level, even if it's the same level you played multiple times.

Where's the Beef?

If you're coming in as a Norse mythology, anime, and/or Dark Souls fan and think that you'll be treated to a unique setting and story not told often in the game world, then you'll be quite disappointed. Neverinth simply doesn't have any story outside of the opening cinematic. What we do know is that after a war of the gods and Ragnarok, Odin hid the seed of the world tree Yggdrasil in his eye and then cast it away. After being planted so that it could grow and blossom, a task is given to the new Valkyries to protect the new world tree at any cost.

And that's where it ends. You won't be finding any extra bits of lore through text or cinematics. After the prologue, you're cast into the world to use your imagination. One can assume that the development team at CreAct had planned to add more story, but we may never know.

Where the game really falls short is the overall length. You can tell that the developers had a clear vision for their game. It would be a rogue-like, action-RPG, with a splash of anime and Norse mythology. However, issues within the developers' personal life had led to this game being abandoned for the time being. For a game with such high potential, it's a bit sad to see.

5

Overall, I believe fans of RPGS -- specifically Dark Souls-esque ones -- will have an overall fun experience with Neverinth. However, you may want to wait for it to go on sale before you do.

Pros

  • Great combat that feels rewarding

  • Deep RPG mechanics that allows for customization

Cons

  • Short game with only a few stages

  • Lack of story or lore

  • Abandoned as of this review due to personal reasons so no future updates
