Thanks to the visceral spectacle that each game provided when taking down gods of Norse mythology, players kept coming back time and time again to rip the limbs from the most revered gods of the realm. When it comes to PlayStation exclusives, the God of War series stands head and shoulders above the majority of other titles on offer. Each game provided a fantastic and action-packed adventure with plenty of mindless button bashing violence for good measure. So it’s hardly surprising that Sony decided to release the God of War Saga, a collection of all the games to date as of 2013. Allowing fans to play through all of Krato’s violent adventures via one neat package.
This game obviously plays like the various God of War titles included in the saga. However, outside of the series, these games play similarly to titles like Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, Bayonetta and NieR: Automata. It’s a classic hack and slash game series with a riveting story but how does this saga do at offering a value for money package? We find out in our review of the God of War Saga.
Plenty of Value
Firstly, let us tell you what’s included in this package. In the saga, players will gain access to God of War, God of War II, God of War III, God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghosts of Sparta. It’s a pretty impressive bundle that allows players who perhaps didn’t own a PSP to play the lesser-known titles in the series. Plus, each game plays very well with no noticeable frame drops, performance issues or changes to the overall gameplay. The authentic GOW experience remains intact and that’s all that players can really ask for here.
The only problem with this, is that there is absolutely nothing new here for returning players. If you enjoy having all the games in one place, then this is a good purchase. However, if you already own each of these games separately, there is nothing to be gained from this purchase. There is no added content, no HD buff in video quality. This is a straight port to a new platform and players should be mindful of this before throwing this money at this package deal.
The Power of Hindsight
At the time of release, this package was priced at $40. A reasonable price considering the amount of content on offer. However, since then, Sony has bundled in several God of War titles into their free giveaway line ups. The games such as God of War: Ascension and the 2016 reimagining of God of War spring to mind. So for players in 2021, this purchase may not be a worthwhile one. However, for those that enjoy the art of collecting, this relic could be exactly what you are looking for.
The Verdict
Overall, the God of War Saga does exactly what it is meant to do. It provides all the great content from the series in one neat, affordable package. It upholds the same quality gameplay, the game visuals and the same narrative choices with nothing lost in the transition. However, equally, there has been nothing added to appease returning fans considering the package for thief collection.
So if you have never owned the more primitive GOW titles, this is a great title for you. However, for veterans of the series, this is a waste of money and you should avoid it at all costs.
Pros:
- Same great gameplay from down the years
- Plenty of GOW content included
- Opportunity for players to play PSP titles
Cons:
- Offers nothing new for veteran players
- GOW as a franchise has offered much better titles since this era
