You wake up in a collapsed cave, picking up an old lantern as you struggle to free yourself from the collapse. You are Auk, one of the last shape-shifters in the world, on a sacred mission to relight 3 ancient temples, before the rest of the world is destroyed. This is the beginning of AER Memories of Old, a beautiful low-poly game that will keep you mesmerized.
The developers have clearly made an effort to produce a wonderful story and world for you. Auk’s shape-shifting ability allows you to fly, and you could easily sink hours into the simple joy of getting around the world.
As you retrace the steps of a lost priestess of old, you’ll find yourself unraveling a story of the lost people of this world, while also working towards a future for the current people.
Puzzles and Platforms
As you explore the world, you will help Auk get through a few dungeons to help in her quest. These dungeons include puzzles and platforms to navigate, none of which are particularly hard. This is not a drawback of the game, as the entire feel of the game is one of relaxation and gentle contemplation.
Freeform play
In keeping with the relaxed feel of the game, you can attack the different dungeons in any order you choose. There’s no real tutorial or control over the game that forces you along a certain path. At most, you can get gentle guidance from the occasional NPC to help you find your way.
The game feels very similar to The First Tree, with it’s freeform nature and meditative feel. If you enjoyed the game, you will likely find this one appealing as well.
Fairly short play
AER Memories of Old isn’t meant to be a grind. The game is fairly straight forward it, and you aren’t held back with leveling or side quests before moving on to the next segment of the story. This is again not necessarily a drawback, but it does leave you hungering for more at the end.
If you do find yourself wishing for more when you get to the end, there is an achievement list you can always play through again with for some added value to the game.
Minor framerate issues
Although the game is mostly very well done, there are a few minor technical issues that could hang players up. There are occasional framerate issues, and the undergrown dungeons can sometimes end up being confusing and hard to navigate out of.
If you’re in the mood for a chill game that doesn’t require vast amounts of your time, AER Memories of Old is a wonderful and relaxing story. While it has a few minor issues, such as the confusing underground dungeons and the framerate issues, overall these are very minor problems for a great game.
