Even though it is still in early access, Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness is one of the more interesting RPGs to be released this year. This is made by a very small team and what I love about the development of this game is that they were inspired by some of the greats in the RPG genre. This game looks like it is going to be a ton of fun when it is complete and if you love RPGs, turn based, and tactics-based combat all wrapped up in an epic fantasy story then this is for you.
Greed Or Hope
The story sounds pretty damn epic and I must admit that I am probably going to struggle to do Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness justice in regards to telling you about the story. Basically, the game is set in the land of Yerengal and this place has been through hell thanks to the rule of a devil god called, Rothgor.
While he was banished and things were good, not all is rosy as it should be now. People are becoming consumed by greed and there is something very strange and sinister going on. It is up to you and the party you assemble to try and fight back, save the land and discover the mystery of the Black Geyser… or you can give into greed and just look out for yourself!
Stay Classy People!
Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness has a fantastic character creation suite for you to play with. There are five playable races from which you can create your hero, these are human, dwarf, elf, feldegug, and rillow. There are then four class groups which are priest, outlaw, warrior, and wizard. You then have a choice from 13 unique classes that are spread between these four.
Around The World
As you would expect from an RPG, even an old school isometric style one like this. Exploration is going to play a big part. There are many different areas in this world and I think they have done an amazing job with their world building here. There are forests that look like they could come alive and dark and dangerous dungeons where you never know what is lying in wait for you. This kind of thing is awesome as it not only keeps the game interesting, it makes you want to really explore every part of this world. Not just for loot and to level up, but to experience it all as well.
Real Time Mortal Kombat!
The combat system in Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness is one that is going to take some skill to master. It is all going to go down in real time, but you can pause things if you need to change things up. This is something I really like as it is not as punishing as some other RPGs can be just for the sake of being extra difficult. You can attack in many different ways, I am more of an arrow and sword kind of guy, but you can utilize magic and other skills too. Making sure your party has a good mix of abilities is going to make combat fun and give you a better chance too!
The developers of Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness have stated that games such as Baldur’s Gate are an inspiration for what they are trying to do here and that to me is very cool. It is certainly packed with content and even in early access, you still have quite the lengthy adventure that you can sink your teeth into. Anyone who likes this kind of “old-school” RPG is sure to enjoy this game.
