Revolution: The Spark is an upcoming game to be released on Steam. This isometric RPG is developed by a small Azerbaijan team by the name of MOR/ANN Games. However, this isn’t the first time the world is introduced to Revolution: The Spark, as they released a webcomic about the game world last year.
As you’d expect from the title, there’s a lot of political tension involved in Revolution: The Spark. And it’s interesting to see they chose the Isometric RPG to deliver this story. It’s not as common as it once was. But with the demo out last week, the game is already available as an early access title. And it has a lot of nice things going for it.
So, is Revolution: The Spark the next big game in the isometric RPG scene? Or is it just another indie game that will fall in the mass of this type of game that's released yearly? Well, even though there's not much more than the demo out about this game, we can get a fairly clear picture of the future of Revolution: The Spark, and we'll tell you about it in a moment. First, let's talk about the game.
About the game
This story-driven, turn-based tactical isometric RPG is all about the setting it is in. In an alternate and very steampunk early 20th century, the Capital of the biggest and strongest empire in the world is on the brink of a revolution. As usual, when leaders get too powerful, and their ranks grow too big, they start to crave even more power. The corruption and injustice grow bigger than their ranks, and society pays the price.
Alex, a military veteran, is getting frustrated by all of this corruption and mess caused by the monarchy. The exploitation of the common folk reaches Alex’s family and as his brother is arrested for an attempted coup, he has to do something.
Of course, the discontent of the people has been growing for a long time now, and Alex is not alone. This is the spark of a revolution that will change it all, and it is going to be a tough one. Join forces with different companions to face the evil monarchy. But beware, for the root of evil is beyond the hands of the corrupt leaders. Evil supernatural beings are manipulating the governing forces, and feeding off everything negative humanity has to offer.
Interesting take
Nowadays we don't get as many steampunk games as we did a few years ago, but Revolution: The Spark is pridefully showing its steampunk world. The artistic style is messy, but the visuals remind us a little of the Borderlands games, and even though it’s an isometric RPG it’s not taking much from the classics like Fallout.
The strategy is key here, not only in the battles but also when confirming the teams, these are humans after all, and not everybody gets along. Make intelligent choices as you progress, for decisions have consequences, and they can be big.
Revolution: The Spark is an interesting project with a lot to offer, but some issues make it lack that special spark, pun intended, that these games need. The visuals are the messy element here, for the steampunk part isn't well developed, nor is it nice looking. It's not for the steampunk fans, even though it goes well with the setting of the story.
Even though the art is not the best, the graphics make it messier, as the cartoony style does not look good and the animations fall short. However, the strategy works great and there are many interesting mechanics implemented. The supernatural element makes it even more interesting too, so it's balanced there.
Pros:
- Nice gameplay
- Interesting mechanics
- Good story
- Different endings
Cons:
- Bad art
- Messy visuals
- A little repetitive
