Barbie and her Sisters: Puppy Rescue is a game that was released in 2015 to tie in with a Barbie movie that was released straight to DVD around the same time. This is a pretty common thing to happen with the Barbie franchise. They would release a movie and then release a game to go along with it. The Barbie series of games is actually pretty damn deep, I wonder if anyone out there has a complete Barbie video game collection? This was released for pretty much everything, but it is the PS3 version I am playing.
Saving The Puppies
The game has a story that sees Barbie and her three sisters rescuing puppies from around the town. This town has a major problem with either puppy theft or naughty puppies that run away from home. The story is told through plenty of cut scenes and the quality is actually way higher than you would think.
At the end of the day, Barbie and her Sisters: Puppy Rescue is a game about looking after puppies and I must admit that the story delivers on this. I am sure little Barbie fans will probably find the story really fun.
Open World Barbie
While nothing in the game is what I would call super deep, I was impressed with the variety on offer in the gameplay department. It will usually start with you playing as Barbie and needing to head out on your bike to find a puppy that is missing. The controls here can be a tad on the frustrating side and I even had to turn my PS3 off when I crashed into a wall and Barbie and the bike got stuck.
You save the puppy and then you take the puppy back to your business which is kind of like a half grooming/ half pet store kind of place. Here you need to care for the puppies. Barbie and her Sisters: Puppy Rescue has you doing this by feeding them, cleaning them, grooming them, and making sure they are healthy. Keeping them fit and happy is also something you will be doing. You can even pimp out their dog house with the money (bones) that you earn. Each “thing” that you do to look after the puppies is like a mini-game. None are amazing, but at the same time, none are bad either.
Straight To DVD!
As I said, Barbie and her Sisters: Puppy Rescue is based on a movie, and that movie is called, The Great Puppy Adventure. As I have not seen that movie, I cannot tell you how close the game comes to following it, but I can tell you this game looks pretty solid. Barbie and her three sisters have had a lot of attention to detail and they look just like they do on the front of the box. The game has many cut scenes and these are done pretty well too.
I was surprised to see that the game offered full voice-acting. This was again, done pretty well. I am not sure if it is the same voice actors as the movie, but from what I played, it was all very fitting.
Ok, so I am clearly not the kind of person that Barbie and her Sisters: Puppy Rescue is aimed at, but I have to admit this game is not bad. It is not great, but at the end of the day for a tie-in for a straight to DVD movie, I think they put far more effort in here than many people would have thought.
I am sure Barbie fans will love this and I have played quite a few Barbie games and this is one of the better ones.
- The game has a fun story
- Looking after the puppies is fun
- There are plenty of mini-games for you to do
- The game looks and sounds pretty damn decent
- There are some “technical” issues with the game, like Barbie getting stuck in a wall
- The whole game is just “ok”
