From as far back as the early 2000s, tower defence games have been around in the form of flash games you could play on your computer. They offered simple yet addictive core gameplay that captivated many of us throughout their rise to popularity. As of the modern-day, we have the ability to play much higher processing games on much smaller systems, meaning that we can get our tower defence fix on the go and in 2014, The Battle Cats was the game to scratch this itch.
This game plays like all the familiar tower defence games that you will have likely encountered before. Take the likes of Bloons Tower Defence as a prime example. This game uses the same gameplay format while putting its own unique spin on the way the action is presented. Plus, making new fun features and mechanics to help the game stand out from the pack.
Good but not Purrfect
The Battle Cats is a game that relies on its zany Japanese charm to carry it forward and for the most part, it succeeds. The art style is wacky and fun but still simplistic enough for handheld devices to keep up. Plus the UI is very accessible, meaning that players will have no issues getting to grips with this game and getting right into the action.
The core gameplay is essentially like any tower defence game you’ve ever played and if that’s what you’re looking for then this is a good game to have in your library. Especially considering that it’s completely free unless you want to buy an in-game currency which is completely optional. It’s not anything that will change your life but it will certainly fill a commute to work or a quiet moment in a waiting room.
A furmidable attempt
The Battle cats do a reasonable job at delivering a unique tower defence performance but ultimately doesn’t do enough to set itself apart. The best thing about this one is the art style and the details that are added to set players explore the lore and story of these cute little feline characters. The zany art and cute characters make it a crystalline daydream that will catch your eye and hold your attention for a while.
However, it’s when this novelty wears off and you see through the cuteness that cracks begin to show. The gameplay is simplistic and doesn’t do much to drive the genre forward. The sound quality is fine but nothing to write home about and as a whole, it’s an experience that will give you a short and welcome blast of entertainment but not one that will live long in the memory. It’s a throwaway title but not by any means a bad one.
