Blackout Protocol

Today I want to talk to you about an early access release, Blackout Protocol. This is a co-op top down shooter that is sure to be a hit with those who love game nights with their buddies. I know that for me personally, this is a game that I am certain will be a frequent play this year with me and my friends. It has a cool sci-fi theme to it and I love how it requires you to work as a team and communicate with each other or else someone is getting sliced in half!

Paranormal Research, What Could Go Wrong!

The story of Blackout Protocol is really cool. There is this corporation called, the S2P Corporation and they want to “benefit” mankind by messing around with paranormal subjects and technologies. Well, one of their secret underground sites that just so happens to contain some of the most dangerous specimens has gone dark and now a team of three badasses need to go in and assess and neutralize the situation!

A Never Ending Run Of Death

Blackout Protocol is a rogue like style shooter where you will be progressing through randomly generated floors of this research facility with the idea being that no two runs will ever be exactly the same. It always keeps you on your toes and I think that there is a great selection of areas here as sometimes you may be in a big fight in a large open areas, and other times you may feel like you literarily have your back against the wall as enemies swarm in down a tight corridor. It is the kind of game where you very rarely have a moment to breathe so there is a lot of excitement and nerve wracking terror here! There is also a panic gauge that you have to keep an eye on too so you do not freak out!

Who, Watch Where You Are Aiming That Thing!

One of the things that makes Blackout Protocol exciting from a co-op perspective is that friendly fire here is a thing. Now, I can see why some people would hate this and at first, I was right there with you. However, this adds an extra element of strategy to the game. You have to be careful and try and work as a team so that no one gets blasted accidentally. The first few times you play the game, friendly fire will be an issue, but once you start working together and people take on roles, for example, one player being the one to make sure things are illuminated, one watching the front, and one watching the back, you start to feel like a real team.

S2P Corporation Is Here To Help

Being the fantastic and friendly corporation that they are, your employers in Blackout Protocol are here to help you clean up the mess that they created! They do this in a few ways such as their DNS which when you die, puts your consciousness back into your past self so you do not lose all of your upgrades! Speaking of upgrades, they will make sure that you always have the best arsenal with various upgrades as you progress through the game. It is stuff like this that I think gives this game such an addictive quality about it.

On the surface, Blackout Protocol looks like any other top down shooter/survival rogue like kind of game, and in many ways, I guess I would have to say that it is. However, I think the cool sci-fi story and the way that there is a real focus on teamwork here with your buddies make this a game that is very much marching to the beat of its own drum. I will say that it can be frustrating dealing with friendly fire at first, but once you get the hang of watching each other's backs, it all clicks together.

Pros:

  • I love the sci-fi setting and story of this game
  • It is a great game if you want some co-op action where you have to work together
  • The game is very challenging, but in a good way
  • I liked playing as part of a team with my friends

Cons:

  • The friendly fire thing may put some people off at first
  • I think you need to be playing with people you know to get the best out of this
