City building games are popular for good reason, and Caesar II has definitely managed to make a mark in the gaming world with a genre crossing game enjoyable for everyone. Caesar II works a lot like SimCity, but with real-time combat added to spice things up.
In this game, you play a Roman citizen who is appointed by the Senate to govern a new province. Your job is to develop a towns resources, connect it to other cities and places with roads, and to take over barbarian towns as well.
Different Game Play Options
In campaign mode, you must fight to bring a certain amount of provinces under your control in order to be declared emperor, while city building mode typically focuses on the building of your town itself.
Both versions of the game are fun and offer something different to the player, so don’t be afraid to try both.
In “normal” campaign mode, you’re not simply trying to gather enough provinces within a certain time limit. You’re also competing against a rival who can cheat his way to success. Pompus Maximus has the ability to race through steps that take you a great deal longer to compete, making it very challenging to succeed against him. While it is certainly possible for you to do so, the challenge will certainly keep you on your toes.
Another aspect of the game that can make it more challenging is that while you can dominate barbarian lands and bring them under your control, you never receive taxes from them. That means your first town is more important than ever, since you depend on it alone for your finances. Raise the taxes too high and you’ll have to quell riots, too low and you won’t have enough finances to continue to grow.
Fun for Kids and Adults
Caesar II is appropriate for kids, while still being fun for adults. If you’re looking for a game to play with your kids, that won’t bore you to tears, Caesar II may be a great compromise. Despite it being 25 years since its release, it remains a popular game because it is a fun and engaging game for older kids and adults.
Caesar II is an old classic for good reason. Unlike many other games that require endless point and click battles to succeed, Caesar II relies on strategy for your success. The game can be played almost endlessly as you try again and again to improve your past performances.
If you’re having a bit of nostalgia for games designed in the 90s, this classic is a great way to experience the richness of games from this era.

In Caesar 2, your goal is not only to successfully build a Roman province, but also protect it from any raids by either a good structural defense (such as walls and towers) or by raising up your armies to battle with the enemy.
This sequel to its award-winning predecessor has the same structure, but many enhancements were made to improve the game play. The interface has been entirely redone, and a query function has been added. This will enable the player to "right click" on any structure and check out all the info on it similar to SimCity 2000.
