Cafe Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies

I have to say that Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies has come along at just the right time for me. If you are having a sense of familiarity with this game, that is probably because it was already released in the east where it was a pretty big hit in terms of both sales and critical acclaim. I have been on the lookout for a new cute visual novel to play and it is pretty awesome we are getting a mainstream release for a game like this here in the west.

This Is The Day That I Die

One of the things that is quite clever about Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies is that at first, you may think that this is yet another visual novel where our protagonist is trying to find out which girl is right for me. Well, you are partially right, but there is also a bit of a mystery at play here in the game too. Our “hero” Takamine Kousei was a regular college guy, who because of an accident tragically died! Yet, he somehow managed to awaken! Finding himself confused about what happened he goes to where he died and this is where he meets a Death Goddess… and her cat. She will help him avoid his fate, but he must help her first.

Not The Kind Of Help You Would Think

You may think that in Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies, you have to go and try and corrupt a bunch of girls or something like that for this Death Goddess, but nope. She is opening a café and she wants you to come and work in it for her… yes, that is actually the plot of this game! As well as Akizuki (The Death Goddess) there are other feisty, quirky, and cute females that you will have to chat and play around with too. This is a visual novel game, so most of what you are doing will be reading the story, but you do get to react, make choices and move things along in certain directions.

Someone Cute Like You

As you can tell from the images, Café Stella and the Reaper's Butterflies is a fantastic looking game. It features characters that are more cute than sexy, but I am honestly ok with that. From what I have seen of the Japanese version there is some lewd content here, but I am pretty sure it is censored. The thing is, even without any lewd content, I love the whole visual style of this game. Each character is cute and the backgrounds are nice and colorful too, colorful is probably the best way to describe the game actually Oh, it also has these few chibi scenes that I got a real kick out of as well.

Pros:

• I really do like how cute all of the girls are
• I like that they went in a more cute than sexy direction for the art
• There are different girls that you get to chat to
• This game already has a fantastic reputation in Japan

Cons:

• I am not sure how much lewd content will be in the Western release of the game
• It might not be ideal for those wanting a ton of sex in their visual novel experience
