An adorable yet complex ARPG, Cat Quest 2 retains its predecessors’ level of polish and unbridled cuteness. Developed by The Gentlebros, this charming RPG tells an epic story of a conflict that involves both cats and dogs and sets them on a quest that will decide the future of their kingdoms.
In this game, straying from the beaten path rewards players with some of the best content to be found, but that doesn’t mean that the main quest isn’t just as entertaining. Let’s take a look at what this feline-based RPG has to offer and how it improves over its stellar prequel.
An Epic Rivalry
The feud between cats and dogs is one of the most well-known rivalries in the animal kingdom. What Cat Quest and its sequel do is taking this enmity and take it to epic proportions. In this game, cats and dogs have kingdoms and societies of their own, and while they’re normally at odds with each other, they’ll have to join forces to fight a common enemy.
Two exiled kings, a dog and a cat, find themselves on a prophetic quest to save the land from a primordial evil. To this end, players will have to explore a vast isometric world filled with monsters and real-time combat.
Double the Fun
New to Cat Quest 2 is the ability to play the game with a friend in local multiplayer. While the first game was a solid and fun RPG experience that had you questing all over the game’s adorable overworld, Cat Quest 2 ups the ante with its stellar multiplayer mode.
In case you’re wondering how well does the game fare in single-player mode, don’t worry: there’s still lots of fun to be had for solo players. The AI controls the character you’re not using at the moment, helping players getting through the toughest battles.
Veterans of the first game will be pleasantly surprised with the massive amount of new content that comes with Cat Quest 2. Tons of new weapons and loot are only the tip of the iceberg of things to get in the game: new quests and a whole new epic story awaits new and returning players who are looking for an entertaining RPG to get.
Another thing worth mentioning about the Cat Quest series, in general, is that it seems to take a page out of Dragon Quest XI’s book. What this means is that this is an RPG designed for novice players that don’t want their games to be bogged down by complicated mechanics or cluttered UIs.
Charming Environments
Just looking at Cat Quest 2’s overworld can fill players with nostalgia. While the map looks like a 2D illustration, the world’s layout seems to come straight out of the SNES era. It’s also worth saying that this game, much like its predecessor, has some gorgeous art throughout.
It’s not just the world that is unbelievably adorable, either: the cute character designs will melt most players’ hearts. This time, however, the bad guys look just like they came straight out of Final Fantasy, with a menacing look that contrasts perfectly with the rest of the game’s cuteness.
Cat Quest 2 takes everything that made its prequel great and further refines it, becoming one of the best RPGs in recent years. Its simplicity and charm are perfectly suited for new players who want to get into the action RPG genre.
Pros:
- Beautiful art and cute characters
- Tons of sidequests and loot to get
- The gameplay is simple to understand and fun to master
