It's about time we had a decent paranormal game, isn't it? Control seeks to rectify the fact that action-adventure games that tap into ethereal or mysterious concepts just haven't been that captivating lately. It's a game that comes from the unknown to deliver the novel - a fresh idea for players to get in touch with. But will it put paranormal games back on the map?
The intriguing thing about Control is that it has been designed and developed by those influenced by the paranormal fiction community. Even though the game comes from a new concept, that immersion in the popular ethereal literature could mean that we are in for a well-written storyline. Possibly some inspired, fresh action-adventure mechanics? Let's see what Control is all about.
Weird Kids on the Block
There's nothing to suggest initially that anything about Control will be extraordinary or unique. However, that deceit makes it all the more attractive in the game's setting and narrative. It's all a bit real with a brutalist, New York City setting featuring characters in a bureaucratic enforcement agency. But of course, that's when it all gets a bit weird.
Players will take the role of Jesse, a Federal Bureau of Control employee who's recently been promoted to head of the organization. That doesn't come without burdens, however. It's you who'll be forced to investigate an unknown location known as the 'Oldest House' to solve the mystery of her missing brother. We won't go further to avoid spoilers, but the narrative is pretty fascinating!
Now, how about gameplay? Honestly, it wasn't what I was expecting. Paranormal games have previously been a little slow-paced to capture the mystery behind the unearthing ethereal events. Not Control, though. The player will use their wealth of psychokinetic abilities to defeat enemies, where combat is high-octane and particularly gripping.
Control is a game that has a surprisingly delicate balance of gameplay and narrative in an intriguing open world. It's a focused, well-rounded game that delivers some bizarrely captivating moments along with some liberal combat mechanics. Anybody that digs the paranormal won't only be impressed - they'll be thrilled. And that really goes for any player!
The New Paranormal
Control came about as a surprise considering very little was known about the concept. Not to mention, paranormal games haven't been as exciting or immersive as of late. You'd argue that the match surpasses even classics like Alan Wake. Control simply feels like a complete package, gripping players on every corner.
Despite an ending that doesn't feel like it gives the grandiose supernatural story justice, it doesn't deter much from the game's enjoyment. There's simply so much to explore, even if you're not focused on the main narrative or side mission.
Little bits can also perk interest and contribute to building this fascinating paranormal universe. It's a must for any kind of player.
