Disney Sports Snowboarding
Here's a great example of 'just another extreme sports game.'? Join up with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pete, and Chip & Dale on a not-so-wide array of courses that'll put your fingers to the test with difficult controls and mind-numbing action! It's Disney Sports Snowboarding for your GBA!
At first glance I thought this was just another snowboarding game clone since it looks like all the others but the controls are much different. In fact, the controls are odd enough that I couldn't even get my character to move left or right until after I read the manual. It seems the cross pad (along with holding the B button) is for performing tricks but the shoulder buttons steer. Interesting concept until you try to tuck for speed since it requires you to hold both steer buttons at the same time, meaning you can't tuck and turn at the same time. Even though the different characters have their own attributes I found the steering to be pretty sluggish. There are only nine tricks in the game that I'm aware of. If you can perform any one of them then you can perform them all since they're all very easy to do. You can also perform magic to help yourself or hinder your opponent depending on which snowboard you're riding. There are several tracks you can unlock during the course of the game but most of them feel like the same course over and over again except with different lighting and colors. You can also earn additional snowboards, trick cards, and tips. I found the trick cards and the tips to be virtually useless although you can trade them with other people if you link up your GBAs. The game modes are limited to racing, stunts, rally (stunts and racing), and time trials. I found all of these modes to be pretty easy to beat since you can pretty much just tuck your way through most of the levels with minimal turning and do the same trick over and over and get the same amount of points for it. The game does have some redeeming qualities but not in terms of gameplay. The graphics are very nice and the music and sounds are pretty cool and there's a neat little cut scene if you win the first race but other than that it just isn't enough to make up for the uninteresting gameplay.
Is this game really THAT bad? Well, if you're really into Disney characters and snowboarding then rent before you buy but there are much better snowboarding games for your GBA (such as SSX Tricky) that have more variety and are more challenging and fun to play.
