There is no shortage of Dora games and the one I am looking at today, Dora the Explorer: Search for Pirates Pig's Treasure is actually way better than you are probably thinking. However, this may be a game that is aimed clearly at kids, but this in its own right is a solid little platformer that younger gamers will really have a fun time with.

We, Will, Help You Pirate Pig

There is a story in Dora the Explorer: Search for Pirates Pig's Treasure that I am sure kids will love. The idea is that the treasure Pirate Pig loves has gone missing and only Dora and Boots can go and get it back for him. The story is rather basic, but the game uses what I think are stills from the show and they look pretty good.

The presentation of the game is actually pretty damn good. This is a game that is the better part of 20 years old and I think it holds up fairly well. They have managed to capture the bright colors of the show and there is a little bit of speech here and there which helps add to the overall authenticity of the game.

Smooth Platforming

The gameplay on offer in Dora the Explorer: Search for Pirates Pig's Treasure is most certainly a platformer. Each level sees you need to get to the end of the stage, collect three stars and a bunch of coins. It sounds like basic stuff, but there is some charm to be had and children will really enjoy this. You start off playing as Dora and she can jump around and explore the level. She can also use her backpack which is used for certain situations. It can be knocking a bunch of logs down with a ball or using a key to open something.

As you explore each level, you will come across a sign that has a picture of Boots on it. When you go past this you then take control of Boots. Boots plays much quicker than Dora and he can climb vines, run fast and jump higher. Switching to Boots is fun, but he controls a little more slippery than what Dora does so I think some might have a little trouble with this. Overall, the gameplay here is fun enough, but it is basic, perfect for younger gamers just getting started in the world of video games.

It would be so easy to just write Dora the Explorer: Search for Pirates Pig's Treasure off. However, the people behind this game clearly put a lot of effort into this. It is not the greatest platformer in the world, but the gameplay is tight, it has charm, it encourages exploration of the short levels and overall it is a fun experience that captures the charm of Dora really well. As far as games aimed at kids go, you can do a heck of a lot worse than this.

Final Score: 8/10

  • Captures the feel of the show well
  • You can play as Boots and Dora

  • The gameplay is actually quite fun
  • Ideal for younger gamers

Cons:

  • It is very easy
  • I feel a bit more voice acting would have been great
