Dread Templar

Most of the time, when someone would describe a game as stripped back and not particularly innovative - you wouldn't have much incentive for playing it. In the case of Dread Templar, those two elements are seemingly working in the game's favor. It's a classic representation of a high-octane FPS - something that will stir the souls of nostalgic genre fans.

Dread Templar has been unleashed on early access to do nothing but capitalize on what made classic FPS games great. It's looking like it could rekindle some great memories, fun gameplay, and ludicrous moments. However, is it even possible to deliver that same classic FPS experience these days?

Just Heading Down To Hell For a Minute

So what on earth is going in Dread Templar? From the moment you're dropped into the gameplay, it's so fast-paced that it's really not going to give you any hint of a narrative. But with that high-octane action - who needs it?! At least we can get the gist of what's happening - you're some Templar heading down to Hell to shoot up as many demons as possible.

No, the narrative is not particularly strong - but if you are a 90s FPS, you'll know that they never were. The whole point is to focus on the traditional FPS mechanics that tailor towards causing complete carnage. Dread Templar, even in its early access stage, is delivering that very well. Apparently, we've got some older gamers amongst the developer ranks!

The graphics focus on that more stripped-down visual experience that doesn't go completely backward - but aren't by any means to modern standards. That gore splatter, gun-slinging animation, and violent deaths of enemies are all there, though. Sure, you've seen this all before, but not in such a manner dedicated to nostalgia.

You can argue that Dread Templar may be a bit questionable to gamers who aren't tuned into the FPS genre canon. But it's hard to say this game isn't a hell of a lot of fun. Players work towards upgrades, stylish ways to slaughter foes, and progress just immerse themselves in the old-school gameplay a little bit more. It's a beautiful, gory, hellish mess - and it's brilliant.

Pixelated Anarchy

It's not really going to take you long to realize what game Dream Templar is an homage to - the classic Doom games, of course. The game is stylistically and mechanically similar in most aspects. So why would you play a carbon copy, you ask? How the developers have recreated such an experience is very admirable.

Dread Templar retains that fun factor and keeps you hugely entertained for hours on end. Its broken AI and outlandish movements are calculated to allow the player to keep gameplay open-ended. It keeps them engaged and immersed in this ridiculous world. Considering it's in early access, there's only room for improvement, too.

Pros:

  • A fantastic dive back into the era of 90s FPS games
  • The gameplay is fast and stylish
  • The combat potential feels nearly unlimited

Cons:

  • Narrative is weak
  • The combo interface could use a bit of tweaking
