Make no mistake about it Blaster Master Zero 3 is one of my most wanted games of 2021. As someone who rented the hell out of the original on the NES back in the day. When Sunsoft brought this series back, I could not have been any more excited. This is the third game in the zero trilogy and they have flat out said this is the end!
Jason Is Back
No, I am not talking about Jason from Friday The 13th! Jason is the hero of Blaster Master and in Blaster Master Zero 3 his mutant killing skills are going to be put to the test once and for all. Like the previous two games, the story will unfold with these gorgeous pixel art style images. This time there is interdimensional travel thrown into the mix and Jason is really up against it if he is going to save the day.
The Gimmick Never Gets Old
The whole gimmick of this series is that it is two game styles. You drive your awesome tank and in these sections, the game is played from a 2D perspective. Then you will also have top-down sections where you control Jason as he walks around. It has been the staple of this series since the beginning and to me, it is still not getting old.
Blaster Master Zero 3 is the most frantic game yet and your skills will well and truly be put to the test. I love the way in the top-down sections you can quickly dodge and then blast the mutants. The 2D tank sections have way more platforming than you would think and there are also a bunch of bosses that want to kill you too.
A Rift Apart
Like that Ratchet & Clank reference there? The big “new” gimmick that Blaster Master Zero 3 has for you is that you can come to these portals and when you stand on them you are transported to another dimension. Here the threats and the rules can change so it will always keep you on your toes. It may not sound like a huge change to the gameplay, but I think it is very cool.
You Look So Good To Me!
That is probably the most obscure WWE reference I have ever done, but seriously, this game is just amazing to look at. The pixel art here is some of the best that I have seen in a game. All of the enemies are nice, thick, and big and look very impressive. They have kept the same kind of style that the original on the NES had, but they just look so much better, it truly is great stuff indeed.
As well as being easy on the eyes, this game has a tremendous soundtrack. Dating all the way back to the NES, Sunsoft was known for great soundtracks, Batman on the NES is one of my all-time favorites. Well, this game does not break that tradition as they have crafted an excellent soundtrack here.
I meant it when I said that Blaster Master Zero 3 is one of my most anticipated games of the year. In terms of “retro” style games, I would probably have to put this at the top of the list. I do think you need to be a fan of the series to appreciate this, but I for one could not be any more excited for this game.
Pros:
- It is the final part of the chapter!
- I love the fantastic pixel art the game has
- Plenty of fast-paced action
- I like the whole travel to other dimension thing the game has going on
Cons:
- You do have to be into the series to find this cool
- It is kind of bittersweet as it is the end of this series
