Build your own racing team for the first time in the long-running high-speed racing series in F1 2020. Put your driving skills to the ultimate test as you race in some of the fastest motor vehicles ever made, and then lead your team to victory both online or offline as you enjoy the game’s new offline multiplayer modes.
For the longest time, the F1 franchise has been seen as a series of complex simulation games that gatekeep new players from joining in on the high-speed fun of F1 racing. However, F1 2020 makes the formula more accessible than ever, featuring some much-needed revamps to the core formula that makes this year’s entry one of the best in the whole franchise.
As has become the tradition with the F1 series, the game is all about portraying the exciting world of F1 racing, simulating even the most minuscule aspects of the sport. This time around, however, the sim elements have been vastly revamped to offer an even more comprehensive experience than before.
The heart of the F1 2020 experience lies in the game’s amazing career mode. This story mode encompasses a 10-year period where the player will have to build the ultimate racing team to win as many championships as possible.
Building up your legacy becomes the game’s main goal — at least in the career mode. Like in every other racing game, players can also enjoy some more immediate racing with quick race modes and the new split-screen multiplayer. As we mentioned before, F1 2020 took some steps toward providing a more accessible experience for players of any skill level. Granted, it’s still no “Burnout Paradise” levels of arcadey, but the controls feel absolutely more user-friendly than ever before.
More Racers, More Fun
In a move that seems to mirror the Forza Horizon series, F1 2020 now offers some assistance to new players. Among the improvements is a new steering assist that should make it easier for newcomers to tackle some of the game’s toughest tracks.
This not only gives players a break in case they want to race against easier AI opponents, but it also means that playing with other players of inferior skill level in local split-screen multiplayer becomes much easier.
For pure racing purists, don’t worry — the core experience of F1 2020 remains untouched in terms of overall difficulty and the quality of the simulation. Cars still feel weighty and with adequate speeds, and fine-tuning some of the smaller aspects of your car is still as detailed as it has ever been.
Customization options also make a stellar return in F1 2020. Things like team emblems and cars’ paints can be customized to ridiculous levels, just like in Forza Horizon 4. The player’s driver can also be customized, giving them that much freedom in creating an avatar that represents them in the game’s online races.
It’s worth mentioning that the game has a tendency to bug out at the most unexpected moments. Performance isn’t terrible at all: as with previous games, F1 2020 is sure to become a benchmark tool for gamers looking to build a powerful gaming rig, just beware that there might be some crashes along the way — and we don’t mean your car.
F1 2020 retains the series' excellent simulation racing, but also includes some much-needed improvements to local multiplayer and overall accessibility.
- Outstanding visuals that look almost lifelike
- Excellent handling and physics simulation
- Local multiplayer can be incredibly fun
- Some odd bugs and crashing issues
