Find Yourself

For most people, childhood trauma is dealt with by going to speak to a therapist. But for the main character of Find Yourself, trauma is dealt with by going down into a subway system full of unspeakable horrors that wait to be uncovered and faced head-on. Find Yourself is a walking simulator-style horror game that features impressive graphics and lighting, a dark story with a terrifying secret, and the most haunted subway cars you have ever experienced. Prepare yourself for extreme fear as we take a look at some of the chilling features present in Find Yourself.

A Walking Nightmare

Like most horror games released on Steam these days, Find Yourself is classified as a “walking simulator”. This means that the game does not feature any kind of combat, but instead is a mostly linear experience through a story with perhaps some minor puzzle scenarios along the way.

For some, a lack of combat is a deal-breaker in terms of what they are willing to play, but for true horror fans, not having a method of self-defense in a horror game is exactly what you want, because it amps up the fear and dread by orders of magnitude. And that fear and dread are available in abundance in Find Yourself, as the player can only move forward and experience the sinister inhabitants of the subway. With no weapons for protection, fear will envelop you as you reveal memories and traumas long-hidden and suppressed. Do your best to stay strong, and maybe you’ll get out of this alive!

Family Trauma on Display

The story of Find Yourself is about the main character having enough of his post-traumatic stress disorder, and choosing to face his fears once and for all. The only issue is, this post-traumatic stress was brought on by things that were done to him as a child by his very own parents, and the fallout of those actions. Both of his parents are now dead. How did they die? Why did they do the things that they did? What did they do to their own son? All of these are unveiled over the course of the game’s hour-long linear story.

An “Unreal” Feat

Find Yourself is a fantastic-looking game, and an experience that was created by a single person: Alexander Reshetnikov, the creator and sole employee of Emika Games. Alexander has made several horror games in this style, and they are all possible due to the accessibility and feature set of the Unreal Engine.

With it, you are able to purchase and import high-quality assets and build games that would otherwise take a team of people months or years to make. Alexander’s other games are similar in how they play due to their simplicity, but they all have their own distinct feel and terrifying monsters.

The often brightly lit abandoned building of Summer of ‘58 has a terror that is completely unique from the dark, morphing train cars of Find Yourself or even the P.T.-like haunted house of Locked up. Whatever Emika Games delivers to us next, it is sure to have its own distinctive horror story and location.

Pros

  • Very impressive looking game for a one-man development studio
  • Super scary
  • Great story

Cons

  • The experience is only about an hour-long
  • Jumpscares might be too intense for some
