I was pretty excited when I first heard about Chasing Static. This is a first-person horror game with a cool Welsh setting that you do not see too often in video games. It has a kind of 90s style to it in terms of the graphics and it is an ideal game to check out if you are after something that is short, scary, and kind of cool. I wanted to take a closer look at this to help you guys know more about what this is offering.
Why Did I Stop Here?
Chasing Static takes place in a rural Welsh village, back in my university days I and a bunch of buddies went camping in Wales and it was creepy as hell! Anyway, we play as a guy called Chris who gets caught in a storm and tries to get out of it in this old café, well this was a mistake. He finds an evil creature devouring a waitress! He passes out and upon waking up tries to find out what the heck is going on here.
Check Your PKE Meter
The game has you walking around in the first person trying to solve the mystery of what exactly is going on. You walk around with this sonic device that can detect the paranormal. It is kind of like the PKE meter that the Ghostbusters use. You need to explore, find clues and be on the lookout for whatever the hell that thing in the café was as you do not want to end up like that poor waitress!
Short, But Scarily Sweet
You are only looking at about two hours of gameplay in Chasing Static, but that is by design. The people behind the game wanted this to be a kind of bite size adventure and I am cool with that. You are free to go about trying to survive and solve this mystery any way that you want. From what I can tell there is no actual right way to play this game and it unfolds at your own pace and in your own way.
Running Like A Champ On A Packard Bell 200MHZ!
They have gone for a kind of retro style in Chasing Static in regards to the visuals. They mention the original PlayStation, but I actually think the game has more of a late 90s PC look to it as it is a bit higher quality than some of the 3D games that the PlayStation had.
One area of the game that did surprise me was the voice acting which is pretty fantastic. That along with the sound design are really what sends shivers down your spine!
I know that this is a short experience, but I would rather have a short game that is good than a long one that is boring. I like the whole mystery that Chasing Static has for us to uncover and if you are in the mood for a short, but scary game then there are not many better than this one released this year.
- I love the Welsh setting of the game
- The story here is fantastic, a mix of sci-fi and horror
- The way that you uncover the mystery is really cool
- I like the late 90s visuals
- You probably will not want to play through this again
- Some may have an issue with the short length of the game
