There's something quite familiar about Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime. Yet, there's something intriguingly different, too. This upcoming action-rogue-like game taps into classic arcade game mechanics while shrouding it in an RPG adventure set in space. It's safe to say there's a fair bit of curiosity floating around this game.
While there's no set release date for Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime, there's already a demo circulating to the critics. We've been given a taste of what's to come. On that basis, we can deliver a sense of what's happening based on the bits of gameplay. So what's underneath this mysterious universe, and will its ambitious genre crossover work?
Space Knights, Assemble!
One feels that the developer watched their fair share of Saturday morning cartoons, given the concept behind Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime. The narrative follows a young space knight tasked with upholding a royal legacy by defeating the evil Void Lords that plague the universe. The story is visually wrapped up in top-down artwork that clashes medieval folklore and futuristic space adventures.
The gameplay taps into the amalgamation of classic concepts by giving players physics-based combat on your spaceship. Those who revel in classic arcade games will thoroughly enjoy the challenges of maneuvering your ship and skillfully eliminating foes. And if an overzealous display of skill wasn't enough for you, players will have to balance the RPG elements of the game to find success.
Your spaceship sits at the heart of gameplay. You'll have to loot, battle, and grind to find parts and upgrades to keep your ship in good condition. Otherwise, combat can be tricky. However, when you get better gear onto your ship - each enemy engagement becomes even more entertaining. It does facilitate some exciting gameplay.
As the game is only in a demo, we can't say much about the narrative. There's definitely potential with Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime. However, the classic arcade machines and the heavy RPG aspect may only appeal to players searching for more of a challenge in their games. The intricate nature of gameplay requires solid focus to manage correctly - and may frustrate those casual players looking to blast their way to glory.
Into the Unknown
If you were even into the arcade game Asteroid, the best way to describe the core gameplay of Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime is a souped-up version of that. Even though you might fob it off, the combat is remarkably well-designed for those who want to show their cognitive skills and management prowess in video games.
Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime seems like one of those games that are made for gamers. The demo has told us enough that it's going to succeed in that respect. What it hasn't told us yet, though, is how accessible it's going to be. We're not sure that's the aim here. But regardless, this game is one to watch as we edge towards the tentative release date next year.
- Challenge combat that keeps players immersed in the game
- Beautiful artwork that clashes classic and contemporary
- The fusion of RPG elements and rogue-like battles works quite well
- Unintuitive for casual players
