Gauntlet: Slayer Edition
Gauntlet Slayer Edition is an enhanced and improved version of the reboot of Gauntlet which was released in 2014. Gauntlet is an all-time arcade classic and a game that I spent a ton of time with on the NES as a kid. I loved the heck out of Gauntlet Legends on N64 and then Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on the PS2 so this is a series I have decades of experience with. So I was excited when I heard the series was being rebooted for a new generation.
The Fab Four
The first way that Gauntlet Slayer Edition tries to capture what the original did is with its roster. The game has four playable characters. You have an Elf, Warrior, Wizard and a Valkyrie. Each character has their own backstory and each character is actually their own class and one thing I feel they have done well is to make each class feel very different.
This is great, but it does make some of the characters unbalanced. The Wizard for example I feel is just too hard to play with to be any kind of fun. I always play as the Warrior as I liked to be a more “smash-mouth” kind of player. This Slayer Edition gives the characters more moves and really does make each one feel like a unique class.
Kill The Boss
The campaign that Gauntlet Slayer Edition offers is a little on the disappointing side. You can play this on your own or online or even in some local co-op. It is not that the campaign is bad, but it is over in a few hours and it is very samey the whole time you play it. Most levels are you walking around killing hordes of monsters, finding loot and then taking on a boss. Now granted this is kind of what Gauntlet was all about, but it is like they have tried to emulate the classic, but left out the soul that game had. I felt that they could have done a bit more here.
New Game Mode!
The big selling point of Gauntlet Slayer Edition and what makes it better than the 2014 first edition is the new game mode Endless which is a blast. As you would probably expect, Endless has you going up against an endless wave of enemies and just trying to survive as long as you can. You can get new stuff in-between waves and making the right decisions on what you get is really key to getting as far as you can.
Sometimes it is really hard to review a game and that is the kind of thing I am having with Gauntlet Slayer Edition. This is not a bad game by any means, but it just feels a bit flat. There are moments where I feel “yes Gauntlet is back” but these are few and far between. I just feel like it needed a little bit “more” to really blow me and other Gauntlet fans away. Those who will have this as their first taste of Gauntlet will probably wonder what all the fuss is about.
Final Score: 7.5/10
- Each character feels unique
- Tons of enemies to kill
- Different difficulty options
- New game modes are fun
- Local co-op is fun
- The game is just not a huge amount of fun for long periods of time
- The Wizard flat out sucks
