Kingdom Hearts 3

Ever since its conception all the way back in 2002, the Kingdom Hearts saga has been one of the most original RPGs out there. But not just because of the gameplay, but because of its interesting mix of Disney and Japanese anime style. Combining everything we love about Final Fantasy games and adding the element of the Disney universe gave it an incredible twist. But as the years passed and many games were released in the series, it got more and more confusing. Over time it's a little hard to keep track of everything that's happened in the story so far. So to be as clear as possible, we'll try to avoid getting into the details of the story of this game as it's a closure for the story. So, let's get started.

Should you play it?

To really understand Kingdom Hearts III you'll need to have some background knowledge of the saga, and it's highly recommended that you play other games in the series in preparation. If you don't it will be even more confusing.

But even if you don't you'll still enjoy a great story, even though it gives closure to multiple lines from previous games. If you've been following the series for years, then the answer is obvious, you just HAVE to play this game. But if you're looking for an entry point to the series, then look for the older games.

The Experience

Kingdom Hearts III has a special way to send you back in time and relive the memories of watching all those amazing Disney/Pixar films for the first time. This is a magical experience, especially if you’ve played all the games in the series. At the same time, it’s still the same gameplay we’re used to seeing in the series, so in that aspect not much has changed.

They’ve added some transformation mechanics to change the combats, this really helps in adding more variety to the battles. The RPG mechanics are never too complex in Kingdom Hearts, and this time it’s no different.

Visually stunning

One of the most interesting aspects of Kingdom Hearts III is just how great it looks. Sure, when you compare the characters from Kingdom Hearts to Final Fantasy XV they stand no chance, but when it comes to the Pixar characters, that's where things get interesting. The characters from the Pixar movies in some cases look even better than their original movies. Toy Story characters look even better than the first movies, and Elsa from Frozen looks just like in the movie.

8.5

Kingdom Hearts III is an excellent and much-needed closure and one that will satisfy its fans. Of course, there's still much more to see in the series, as more games are coming up already. However some things still hold this game back, and while it's possibly the best game in the series, it could be better. Especially in the gameplay mechanics, as they could be more original and well implemented. But the story, visuals, and overall magical experience make up for it.

Pros

  • Great Story
  • Excellent Visuals
  • Great Music

Cons

  • Can be a little disappointing
  • Lacks content
  • Not-so-original gameplay

Game Reviews

The post-credits scene in Kingdom Hearts II teased a fully grown, armor-clad Sora. What little we've seen of Kingdom Hearts III thus far doesn't seem to follow that thread, much to my chagrin he's still rocking his trademark baggy shorts. But one thing we do know has piqued my interest: Designer and director Tetsuya Nomura has expressed the desire to include Marvel characters in KHIII, and now that Disney owns the comics giant, it's not at all an impossibility. We got a Tron stage, after all, didn't we?
