If you’ve ever had the urge to march off into the wilds in the hopes of striking it rich, Gold Hunter is a gold simulator that will give you that opportunity. The game starts you off with a small amount of starting funds and requires you to buy what you think you need from the shop.
You’ll have to choose what you think you need, or at least what you can afford, and strike out from there. Overall, the game follows a plot very similar to Gold Rush: The Game, but with a more generalized concept and no specific artifacts to dig up.
Graphics are so-so
The opening graphics for the game have a man, woman and dog looking down into a forested ravine. The characters are reasonable quality but look like they’re uncomfortably floating above the Earth due to a complete and utter lack of shadowing.
Although the shadowing improves later in the game with some shadows present in clothing, the uncomfortable floaty look continues throughout the game. Everything appears to be perched on air just a little bit above the ground.
Multiplayer option has potential
One interesting feature of the game is that it has some multiplayer features. This is extremely unusual in a simulator like this one, but it has a lot of potential. Having a friend to help you in the mining process adds to the realism (and let’s face it, the fun) of mining, and makes things go faster as well.
Unfortunately, multi-player is very glitchy at this time. Players can fall through the map, items, including cars can sink in, and the camera can shake uncontrollably when in multiplayer at this time. Hopefully, these things get fixed.
Very glitchy overall
The game has a lot of bug issues. Items can get lost or go flying, cars can get stuck inside buckets or lodged in trees. You may have to chase your truck down if you want to drive back to the store. Many of these bugs are very basic, fundamental ones that probably should have been addressed before being released into alpha. The developers seem to be aware of the issues, but updates to fix the errors happen at a glacial pace. It’s unlikely that the bugs you see today will really be fixed in a few days, weeks, or even months.
Gold Hunter could be worse. It has a few concepts that give it the potential to be a standout for gold simulators. Options like multi-player, a large map to explore, and the ability to build up to a large-scale gold miner all have their benefits. Unfortunately, the premium price tag for such a glitchy game is a real turn off. The pace for fixing these errors have been extremely slow, and the graphics and sound aren’t all that great. While this is an indie production and it is in Alpha right now, it needs a lot of work before it can be a quality game.
Pros:
- Great overall concept
- Multiplayer option
Cons:
- Too glitchy to be enjoyable
- So-so graphics
