Hammer Kid

I have to say that Hammer Kid is the kind of game I could see myself losing my mind over back in the 16-bit days. This is an indie platformer that has a ton of charm and is proudly displaying its 16-bit inspirations right from the start. You can check out a short demo on steam right now and the game just has a very cool and classic charm that has gotten me pretty excited about it. It is due for a full release really soon and from what I have read this developer has an interesting idea for a follow up game already!

The God Of Thunder

Our hero in the game, the titular Hammer Kid bares more than a passing resemblance to the Mighty Thor, actually, that follow up game I was talking about is even called, Tiny Thor. Anyway, our hero needs to defend the land from an evil called Szymon Spitfire who has sent a whole bunch of nasty monsters to cause trouble. Only this little dude, his powerful hammer, and his can-do attitude can save the day!

Hammer Don’t Hurt Em!

The gameplay of Hammer Kid really does look like something that you would have seen back in the Super Nintendo in 1994. It is a platformer with four different worlds that have 40 levels spread between them. The platforming feels great and there is a bit of skill required here too which I do like. You can smash enemies with your hammer, but you can also use projectiles as well. You also need to use your hammer to d things like open switches and there are even sections where you have to run away from danger. In all, it is a solid platformer that really is a lot of fun, oh and there are some fun boss fights as well!

Something European

I know that I have referenced the Super Nintendo when talking about Hammer Kid, but the visuals of the game are quite interesting. As this is a 16-bit style game, it of course uses pixel art for the graphics and they look fantastic. However, I have to say that I am getting more of an “Amiga” vibe from the game's visuals than I am a SNES or Genesis game. That is not meant as a criticism or anything like that, just an observation. As well as the 16-bit style graphics, there are some awesome tunes in the game that very much feel like they could have been on the SNES and even the NES in places.

If you like 16-bit style platform games then Hammer Kid is certainly a game that you need to check out. It is pretty awesome that we have a game like this in 2022 coming out. I really appreciate how the developer is just trying to make a fun game here and not try to reinvent the genre or try and be unnecessarily clever. This is a fun 16-bit platformer and I cannot wait to see the final product. I am so into it that I hope it does well enough so they make the Tiny Thor game they mention on their Steam page!

Pros:

  • I love the idea of playing as a kid like version of Thor
  • You can get various attacks for your hammer
  • The game has some awesome 16-bit style art
  • The gameplay is a lot of fun and very similar to the platformers of the SNES era

Cons:

  • I think you need to have an appreciation for 16-bit era platformers to get into this
  • I am not sure how many power-ups for the hammer there actually are in the game
