Heroes of Newerth
What better time than now to take a look at the phenomenon that is Heroes of Newerth. It has been heavily implied that the latest Heroes of Newerth patch could be the last one that the game gets. It has been going on strong for ten years and while not as huge as League of Legends. It is fair to say that Heroes of Newerth had its own dedicated fan base and that the game must have been doing something good to stay around for a decade.
Pick Your Hero
As is the case with any MOBA style game, Heroes of Newerth has a ton of heroes for you to play as. It actually has over 100 different heroes for you to choose from. While when you first play the game you will probably pick the hero that you think is the coolest. There is a fair bit of diversity to the cast of characters. To start with the heroes fall into either melee or ranged groups, but then things get a little more complex as you get into the rolls that a character is designed to play such as a medic, tank, support and so on. Each of the characters has around four (maybe five) attacks that they can do and again these differ from character to character. Some may specialize in attacking from a distance others may utilize summoning of pets and other things to help in battle. I think in general there is a great selection of characters here and you are sure to find one that you think not only looks cool but plays to your liking as well.
The War To End All Wars!
The gameplay of Heroes of Newerth is not exactly new user friendly, but it does offer what you would expect from a MOBA game. The battles are based on teams of five and you will be playing as one of two sides who are called The Hellbourne and The Legion. Each of these has their own central structure. The Hellbourne have the Sacrificial Shrine and The Legion have The World tree. Destroying your enemies central structure is one way to secure victory. You can also force your enemy to throw in the towel as well. The battle starts with the two teams at opposites ends of the map where they have their own base. From their teamwork is required to try and make sure you are on the winning side. There is a steep learning curve here and finding an experienced player willing to help a new one can be a quest in itself as the community is not exactly known for being super friendly to new players.
Play Your Way
Heroes of Newerth does offer you a few different game modes. If you want to just play with your buddies you guys can team up and take on bots. This is a great way to learn how to actually play the game. You can also take part in a public game. This is great for playing with other people and having fun by changing some of the options. The more serious game modes are first of all Ranked Mode. In Ranked Mode, you play with your team as you try to move up the rankings and leave your mark on the game. Mid Wars sees the battles rage on the Mid Wars Map.
Heroes of Newerth may have never reached the heights of DOTA 2 or League of Legends. However, it does have a really dedicated fan base and the team behind the game have supported it very well over the last ten years. It can be a hard game to get into, but that makes it even more rewarding when you actually get how the game plays.
