Do you remember hopping between pillows thrown on the floor as a child, pretending that the floor is lava? In the game, “Hot Lava,” this childhood pastime is reinvented in a time trial runner that pits you against familiar settings like the gym or a park playground. The difference, of course, is that the floor really is lava.
The game features cute, cartoonish graphics and action figures as the main characters. You leap these characters from object to object, similar to how you move Faith Connors in the game Mirror’s Edge. Unlike other platformers, you don’t have the ability to grab edges, which makes it even more challenging.
One of the biggest problems with the game is the klunky controls. Although touch controls are offered, the game is frustrating to play without a controller. Late jumps are required, and the jumps available are extremely imprecise. The game is played from a first person perspective, and the controls partially obscure the map. You need a controller so you can use a finger to change your angle while still keeping control of the rest of the game. Even then, it’s easy to accidentally hit the “grab” button instead or unintentionally miss your mark. Expect to hit the lava a lot until you get used to the klunky controls, and even then a fall every once in a while is still a strong possibility.
Weird Multi-Player Option
Another unusual aspect of the game is the multi-player aspect of it. Whether you like it or not, other people may be playing the same level as you. You will be able to see them as you are moving about but have the option to completely ignore them.
Although it is hard to get lost in the game due to a helpful sprite that guides you along the way, players can follow each other to help stay on the right path. Unfortunately, there’s no way to avoid having people running around while you are playing, which can cause lag and distract you from the game itself.
Levels vary wildly
Most of the game progresses in challenge as you’d expect, with each section progressively getting harder. In order to unlock new maps, you need to collect a certain number of stars from the previous map. This can be done through not dying once while playing, meeting a certain time frame, etc. Unfortunately, the “Follow your sister” level abruptly changes gears to become frustrating. In this section you have to follow your sister, but you can’t stop, pause the game, or get too far behind. The sequence is long, but you can’t even take a break. This section of the game is very frustrating.
If you really like first person parkour, this game could be worth a try for you. If you’re just looking for a game and aren’t passionate about the genre, this game may be frustrating for you. The klunky controls make it extremely difficult to navigate and getting bogged down with other players can be problematic. This game is okay, but it will need a lot of updates to truly be good.
