I Am Setsuna

Made to be a love letter to classic 90s RPGs, I am Setsuna is a charming and well made throwback that managed to hold my attention the whole time I was playing it. I actually have this game on both the Nintendo Switch (where it was a launch game) and on PC and both versions are pretty much identical. If you enjoy classic JRPG style games, you will have a fun time with this one here. It may not be trying to do anything new, but it is a game that achieves what it sets out to do.

Is That Yuna?

If you have read anything about, I am Setsuna, I would wager that it is in regards to how similar the story is to Final Fantasy X! the main character is a man called Endir and he has to protect the young girl called Setsuna who has to make a journey across the dangerous lands to be a sacrifice to please the monsters that can cause havoc in the world. It is really quite remarkable just how similar the story is! However, I still enjoyed it and felt that the cast of characters were interesting and likable, even if you could see where the story was going right from the start.

Triggering My Inner Chrono

Chrono Trigger is the main game that was referenced when I am Setsuna was released and it is very easy to see why. This game has a very addictive, fun, and deep active time battle system. It makes combat so much fun, but things are a bit more in-depth than they were back in Chrono Trigger. You can level up and this will improve your HP and MP, but it is the way that you can add these mods to your “techs” which basically work as spells that make the combat so much fun. This lets you customize your spells and there are many different combinations and I had a great time trying as many out as I could.

Snow Time!

I love the look of I am Setsuna. While the game does have a bit of a retro look to it, this game features some truly stunning artwork, especially in regards to the snow. The snow is what really made this game for me and the intro with the snow got me invested right from the start. The character sprites, enemies, and locations have all been crafted with a great deal of love and care.

Take A Bow

To go along with the great visuals, we have a soundtrack that truly is something special. I am Setsuna features a very interesting soundtrack that is mainly made with a piano and a few percussion instruments. It is just so very well done, so well done that I wish I had a physical soundtrack of it. I am actually surprised that this game does not get brought up more often based on the soundtrack alone.

Pros:

• I liked how similar to Final Fantasy X the story was
• The battle system is just so much fun
• I found the whole adventure to be a good time
• It is available for pretty much every system

Cons:

• The game is not really trying anything radically new
• The story may be too similar to Final Fantasy X for some people to get over
