When it comes to real time strategy games Iron Harvest is one of the most interesting of the modern batch. Please note that as I write this, think of this more of a preview as the game is technically not officially released as I write this piece. The thing is, this looks so interesting and the folks at Deep Silver are really hyping it up that I cannot help, but be intrigued by it.
Steam Punk Warfare
I find that real time strategy games tend to fall into three most used categories, real war, sci-fi, and fantasy. What I like about the premise of Iron Harvest is that it is taking a kind of different approach. I am sure this has been done before, but the fact the game is set after the first World War, but in a different kind of “world” makes it very interesting.
Man has started to use these massive diesel-operated machines that are like mechs. This gives the game that 1920s feel, but in a more steampunk way. Even in this early stage, there is a lot of personality to the game and I for one cannot wait to experience everything the game has to offer. The presentation of the game looks great and I really think they have something special with their steampunk 1920 thing they have going on here.
Play Your Way
What we know so far about Iron Harvest is that the game is going to be pretty stacked when it comes to gameplay. It is featuring an epic campaign that spans over 20 missions and lets you experience the story from different sides. I always like this as it gives you a more complete view of the way things are going on. You can enjoy the campaign, but as you would expect multiplayer is going to be huge with this game. As is the case with any RTS game, I would probably suggest that playing through the campaign before jumping online is the way you probably want to go with this.
Classic Real Time Strategy
One of the things I have heard Deep Silver say over and over with this game is how it is classic real time strategy. This something I am cool with as many modern games in this genre goes way too far and are convoluted and sometimes lose a bit of fun as a result. Here you have three very diverse factions that you can choose between. There are many different units (over 40) plus there are the “heroes” that have their own special abilities. The game has 9 of these and from what I have seen they all have a ton of personality to them.
I know that it is very, very early days, but I feel that Iron Harvest is a game that needs to be getting more attention than it is. If you are a fan of real time strategy games that like to be more “old school” in their game design, this is a game you have to keep an eye on. The setting of the game is awesome and I for one cannot wait to play all the way through this.
- I liked how different each of the three factions is
- Plenty of units to use in battle
- Each of the 9 heroes feels unique
- The presentation is great
- I really like the setting they have created for this game
- The release date is not set in stone just yet
- Great voice acting could help make things even more epic
