There's something that would feel heartwarming immediately about KAPIA. It's got the family-friendly adventure vibe, with the story centering around a man and his granddaughter out to save the world. No matter what kind of narratives you prefer, it's always hard to avoid pleasant little concepts like this. And that's even before discovering what the genre is!
KAPIA is a point-and-click adventure game that translates classic genre gameplay into something palatable against modern expectations. First impressions would already say they are achieving that target. The visuals look at good as a modern animated film. The puzzles look as exciting and mind-bending as they'll ever be. Overall, KAPIA looks like a good take on the genre, but naturally, we'll have to confirm that.
Crossing the Great Divide
The narrative of KAPIA is a straightforward concept that could get anyone tuned to the game's universe pretty quickly. The world is split between East and West, in constant conflict. Ex-pilot Stefan wants peace in the world, and he's going to do everything he can to get it - but not without the help of his young granddaughter Reny.
You'll progress through storyline solving puzzles in an attempt to understand why the world is in such disarray. It will be the key to saving it and eliminating the endless war between the two sides. It's a classic point-and-click adventure where there will be great puzzles, a rich storyline, immersive characters, and a few frustrating moments, of course.
KAPIA is a pleasure nearly right the way through. Players will enjoy the gameplay exchanges between the two protagonists solving puzzles creatively. But the stories and personalities within the game make the game stand on its feet. They are well-developed, with gameplay only boosting your connections with them. It builds a world you feel immersed in, even if it's the pseudo-realistic universe.
So is there anything that drags KAPIA down? Well, the universe's lore does get a little complex in places. Maybe there could be a few puzzle tweaks here and there. But other than that, it's a damn fine point-and-click adventure game. It's a broad range of players who could enjoy without feeling frustrated yet getting their challenging gameplay fix.
Scratchin' the Old Noodle
KAPIA does an excellent job of bringing the point-and-click genre into 2022. It's a brilliant story fused with a charming atmosphere and challenging gameplay. The most remarkable aspect is that one feels satisfied with the narrative and their efforts in puzzles. Still, without it being overly burdensome like so many puzzlers seem today.
KAPIA is one of those games that would be preferred over other point-and-click adventures like The Walking Dead. It's visually appealing, not an emotional roller coaster, and choices don't feel so punishing. It's simply a fun story from beginning to end that won't leave any players unhappy with the outcomes. It's a definite recommendation.
