Ghost on the Shore is an indie walking sim that as I write this still does not have a concrete release date. It does appear that it is going to be released during the first quarter of the year, but as with all indie games, that date is certainly not set in stone. If you had asked me about 10 to 15 years ago if “walking sim” style games would be something that I ever would be interested in I would have laughed at you. Man, how times have changed, I cannot get enough of character and story driven games like this one and that is why I wanted to take a closer look at it today.
Just The Two Of Us
In Ghost on the Shore, we play as Riley, Riley is a young British girl who has found herself in a very strange place. She is on this strange seemingly abandoned island where there are no signs of life! There may be no signs of “life” however, there is plenty of afterlife here. Riley is “possessed” by a ghost called, Josh, Josh is Scottish and he is not a bad spirit at all. Riley along with Josh in her head, set out on an adventure to try and figure out what happened to all of the people here.
Telling A Good Story
One of the things that I really think is neat about Ghost on the Shore is the way that the story unfolds. To start with, we get a lot of banter between Riley and Josh which is superb and helps develop their characters. The two have some excellent back and forth and there is a lot of heart and humor to this which thanks to the voice acting really does make you more invested in what is going on.
The Lore Of The Island
Like many other walking indie style sims, Ghost on the Shore will greatly expand the lore and the story of the game with you finding journals, wiring in your own journal, and even sketching things too. I know that some people like their plots to be more forcefully told to them, but I really do love this kind of thing as I think that it is a lot of fun to explore and find out more about what happened here and the various people who called this place home. Speaking of “people” Josh is not the only ghost in this game, you will come across many more that you will need to interact with.
An Indie Darling
The moment you lay eyes on Ghost on the Shore, you know that you are in for something special here. The visuals are just so “indie” and that is not something I am throwing out in a derogative way. Things are not exactly chock-full of little details, but the world and characters are brought to life with amazing lighting and a fantastic use of color as well. It is a very beautiful game to look at and that helps you get more immersed in this world.
I think that Ghost on the Shore is a game that I feel is going to be very special. I for one cannot wait to get fully invested in this game world and think that they have done something that is very special.
I love the whole premise of what is going on here and think that this is going to be the kind of game that is very interesting to discuss with other people who have played it.
- I love the island setting of the game
- The use of light and color is very well done
- The banter between Riley and Josh is something that I think is very well done
- As far as walking sims go, this looks to be one of the best 2022 has to offer
- These types of walking sims are not for everyone
- Will, there be any reason to go back and play the game once you are done with it
