Get yourself ready for this fresh take on the post-apocalyptic genre with Life of Delta. You take control of Delta, a small service robot trying to survive the harsh environments left behind by the humans after their catastrophic world-ending war. In a search to find his lost friend, Delta must use all of his wits as you point and click your way across the wastelands and solve puzzles, make enemies and experience a truly unique story. If this sounds interesting to you, which it should, keep reading as we get into it.
This is a point and click adventure game, so much like The Secret of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, or the more modern, Genesis Noir. You play as the little robot Delta, and must solve over 50 engaging puzzles and minigames as you travel across post-apocalyptic Japan. Some of these might be simpler and more straightforward like pipe connection puzzles, where you have to make the fluid move from one place to another unobstructed. Or you could be using items you have gathered, combined with other items to solve another, more material issue. These could wind up with you building a spaceship or a Molotov cocktail; in either case, something is getting accomplished.
The story of Life of Delta is as I have described. You follow this little robot as he travels the land searching for his lost friend. There are a lot of fantastic personalities and characters that you encounter all through the world and it all contributes fantastically both to the story and to the general world building. Each character tells their own story, which really makes you feel like it’s a moving changing world that you’re getting a snapshot of. I will say, this game is very, very cute but expect some heartache along the way. Sometimes people aren’t very nice to Delta so be ready for that. I was amazed from start to finish with how much personality this game has. It bleeds through in everything you see and do.
Goodness gracious, let me get into the visuals. I was regularly stunned by how utterly brilliant this game looked on a regular interval. Whether it’s the amazing diversity of character designs between Delta and the other robots that he encounters as he travels, but also of the stunning hand-painted levels that provide a level of detail that I couldn’t wrap my head around. At nearly any point, you can stop and look at the game, feeling like it was detailed concept art n each frame. The character animations and the fully animated cutscenes give this game a veneer that cannot be denied. Everything about it is so charming, from the particle effects to the minute details of every day scenarios. I was blown away all the while I played it.
A fantastic game that offers a lot to the discerning player. If you want a retro game done in a modern style, you’ll love this.
