Mafia III: Sign of the Times is the third and final piece of DLC for Mafia 3. While it may raise my eyebrows in regards to the way it handles one of Lincoln’s most “noble” attributes. This is a really fun story and a great way for them to bring the saga of Mafia III to a close.
Call In The Scooby Gang?
So far, I feel that both the two previous Mafia III DLC’s have done a good job with their story. Each one felt radically different and Mafia III: Sign of the Times is the most different of all the three. This time Lincoln and Father James head to Sammy’s bar and end up dealing with a strange cult that has got this pregnant woman in their grasp and is trying to get her to kill for them! It is nothing like anything else we have seen in Mafia III at this point and I love the rather “supernatural” storytelling we have here. The fact that Anna is a pretty damn awesome character really does drive you forward into finding out what the heck the deal with this weird and evil cult its.
Bullet Time Baby!
While the last DLC, Stones Unturned did not add a major new gameplay element as Faster Baby did. Mafia III: Sign of the Times does! This time they have made it so that you can slow down time when you are shooting. This is a lot of fun and it is handled with a meter that drains as you use it. What is cool about this is the way that the meter can be replenished with headshots. This does make the game very easy, but it is also a lot of fun to use. Another new addition to the gameplay is the way that Lincoln has to use detective skills at various crime scenes. I really like what they have done here and while basic, it does keep the gameplay quite fresh.
Code? What Stinking Code?
I loved Lincoln as a character and found him to be very well written. However, Mafia III: Sign of the Times throws one of his major characteristics out of the window. Part of Lincoln's code is that he will never kill a woman, no matter what. Well in this story, he guns them down for fun and it is never addressed.
Sammy’s Bar
I would say that Mafia III: Sign of the Times has the best side content of any of the three DLC packs so far. Once you have beaten the story, you can try and rebuild Sammy’s Bar. This is way more in-depth than you would think and features some of the most interesting side missions of the entire game. I would say that they could have perhaps made a whole DLC story based around the rebuilding of Sammy’s Bar.
I really did enjoy my time with Mafia III as a whole. I think that what they did here with Mafia III: Sign of the Times was a great way for them to bring this game to a close. It has a really fun story and I love the side content that this has as well. I am not sure if I prefer it to Faster, Baby, but I can tell you this is a good time and if you like the world of Mafia III, you will really enjoy what this is offering.
Final Score: 8/10
