Mario Party 6 is the sixth installment of the Mario Party series, in which characters from the Super Mario Brothers universe are taken and put into minigames for players to play as a party game, with multiple people on the same console in one room. Being a fan favorite at New Year’s Eve parties, birthday parties, or sleepovers for younger kids, the Mario Party series is an absolute hit, and the developers did not fail to bring another great adaption of the series with Mario Party 6.
The visual effects remain remotely the same as any other Mario Party game. The classic art style of Nintendo’s famous characters like Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong remains the same, they are just put into a different environment.
Often seeing the characters larger than how they appear in their own respective games, the graphics can be expected to be a little more detailed, but not so much that it ruins the cartoonish and fun feel of being with the Mario universe. Some visual effects are unexpected if one has not played a Mario Party game before, as the often two-dimensional world that Mario and his friends live in is not present, but a three-dimensional world takes place instead.
The characters roam on either a large gameboard or are seen throwing darts at a board and attempting to knock pins down with a ball as the player controls it. Seeing the characters in a more upbeat environment is a different way to look at them, and I am sure they need a break after all the Princess saving they do in one day.
The gameboard presented is a part of a larger storyline that Mario is actually taking place in. Revealed in an opening cut scene, the sun and the moon are in an argument, both claiming to be the most important object in the sky, and neither of them can settle the argument. Mario comes up with a solution for the two by offering to harness the powers of the stars to set a balance for them. The stars are found throughout the board game and often at the end of levels, with players competing to earn more stars in each of the six new game boards that come in Mario Party 6, having different day and night systems for each board. If one is not feeling up to the board game challenge, the option is available to skip the board game and go straight into a series of minigames, competing against their friends.
Mario Party is an absolute classic, and the developers delivered with Mario Party 6, adding in new boards, a different storyline, and the new mic mode. It would have been nice to have something else a little different and exciting, but it is still an extremely enjoyable game, nonetheless. Mario Party 6 earns at least a 9/10 rating.
The newest game presented is the Mic Mode, as players utilize the mic on the GameCube to play new minigames in different ways, making for some exciting and hilarious interactions of friends and their devices.
